OK, been to see her with the vet. He was very concerned and says she is verging on being pathologically underweight.
Good news: she has a normal temperature, only a slight heart murmour, and he thinks her condition is 99% down to her teeth.
He also puts her at 30 years old. She has a couple of stumps for teeth at the back and the fronts are damaged. However, she was fairly bright in herself and was attempting to eat the grass in a strange cow-chewing pattern!
He has given her the all clear to travel, so, all being well, 10am tomorrow she will be picked up and on her way back here!
Some pics I managed to steal on my phone:

CH so glad this is all moving ahead, wonderful news. I should think she will be so grateful to you for taking care of her and nursing her back to health.
I wonder how she has got so thin despite it being at the time of year when the grass is lush and she is turned out. I wonder if she's been kept in a stable somewhere with very limited food and turned out when it was time to be sold.

Poor poor thing. Thank god the lady advertised her for sale (quite brave of her I spose..). Thank god she is being moved and has a chance to be comfortable in her old age. Bless her. These pictures sicken me, they really do. Can't really say much more. Too emotional. Though I suspect in this particular case it was down to ignorance on the owners part rather than brutal negligence and cruelty (even though the ignorance in effect caused cruelty.. does that make any sense at all?).
Anyhoooo! She is off tomorrow? Is that plan of action still going ahead? To pastures new.. Well done to all concerned!
Incidentally, on another matter I understand KAS to be co-ordinating pledges of funds to help.. I realise this no longer was to go towards the purchase of Gracie but might end up donated to EMW or the like. I emailed KAS the other day to "honour" my pledge and have had no reply. Does anyone know the current situation regards this?

Thanks all. Yep, she is very bad. Her teeth are such that she is getting no goodness from the grass and is therefore a walking bag of bones. She needs 4/5 small, easily digestable meals a day.
She is also going to have the rest of her teeth done, be wormed straight away, and spend the next few months recuperating.
10am tomorrow we are picking her up.

wow CH the for sale pictures didnt show the full extent at just how thin she is. Thats absolutely appalling.
We have a pony on our yard who through age has lost most of here teeth, the owner is wonderful and manages it very hence the pony is in fantastic condition. I know you are taking professional advice but I might ask her what she feeds to keep her condition if you want. Every little bit helps hey.
CH your a star for picking up this pony and giving it a life it should have been anyhow. God bless you. Please keep us updated I would just love to see her progress.

Well done CH , and good luck to this dear little mare. I hope she travels to you well.
I have seen ponies out on the New Forest who get this thin, but who put on weight again remarkably when their owners take them into their holdings for worming, teeth and a bit of feeding.
Sometimes older ponies have old, long standing worm damage which limits their ability to absorb food.
Do let us know how Gracie does on her "feeding up" regime.

Well, here she is, at home now
Big thanks to CJ for bringing her over. We had a scary moment where we thought she might not load - but patience and a few pony nuts persuaded her. Once she was onboard she travelled fine.
She is now out in the paddock with the field shelter and she has had a bucket of sugar beet, alfa a, top spec soaked into a wet mash with a dash of blood liquid (thanks for that tip EMW). She absolutely loved it and we sat and watched her eat every bit.
She's met the others from a distance and squealed at them already - she's a fiesty madam considering.
She's also met a bright yellow sponge (she was a bit nervous of that) which I wiped over her to try and get rid of the horseflies she attracts and she let me spray her with fly spray all over.
She's grazing, and she's had a roll, and she is coming up for a fuss every five mins
I have every hope we will see a big improvement in this little mare and soon. She was genuinely hungry for her feed this morning, which, to me is a good sign that we can turn her round. I am much more positive about her this morning. Will go and get some more pics in a bit!

CH... I bet you already know this, but re worming, when they come in here very very thin we tend to leave the worming off for the first week of getting them used to feed in their bellies again, then worm with a gentle panacur or strongid paste, then again 6 weeks later. It tends to be the gentlest way on a gut not used to anything much at all and a week is a decent amount of time to get that gut used to more food.
I'm so pleased for you.

She looks like a mini thoroughbred in those pics - how big did you say she was? She's awfully pretty.
Well done you for taking her on, she is a VERY lucky girl.
My old girl will be 30 this year, and she is nothing LIKE as thin as Gracie, and still very full of life and feisty lol!

Aww bless her what a sweet heart. I had my old girl Beauty from age 28 to almost age 40 when we lost her, and even with wobbly toothy pegs she never got thin when on a careful diet, shows what can be done with care and good management. Heres hoping she flourishes with you!
