Hi, I have a Welsh Cob X Hackney(possibly!) who has formed a very strong bond with our New Forest. I am attempting to work through this, and would be grateful for any advice, ideas etc; don't want to put too much in this in case I start rambling, also any info. regarding the Welsh Cob as I assumed I had bought a "sensible cob" and have spent the last 9 months in a state of shock! Will stop now. Many thanks. Wendy

MMM. Welsh Cobs are pretty hot, but with structure and good training, are as sweet as honey, i have one. And it has been a bit crazy at times! They are very intelligent, gentle hearts but firery spirits. I think it is the innate intelligence that can get a little tangled at times if they are stressed, like in seperation in your case. I am having the same problem with my welsh and the arab she shares the field with. So i take her away for a little each day on the lead, just down the road, and when she starts to create, i just stop and let her nibble the grass on the verge (the way to every welshies heart i reckon!) I think i will increase this a little every day until she feels as safe with me as she does with her friend, and also so her freind learns that she comes and goes but will not dessert her forever. Maybe trying this if possible at the same time each day so it is something that becomes routine. Bounderies are the key i think. She must behave but i am still sympathetic to her natural atatchment, so i don't bully her, but make sure she walks with her head by mine. And if she does skip past calling her friend, i just stop, correct her by applying pressure to her headcoller and asking her back again (maybe reinforced by placing my hand on her chest) and walking on again. Remember to breath and keep body language relaxed (rounded shoulders when walking and head slightly tilted forward, assertive when horse skips about, correct, and relax again, walk on...) I'm out tomorrow sinse today went well, a little further out the comfort zone, then back again, and so on, day by day.

Welshies definately are funny beasts, took me ages to get mine to settle when left alone in the field, just had to keep incresing the time I kept the other one away. Strange tho, hes always been ok coming away himself.
