Melanomas are quite common in grey horses. Never worried me though and I have 2 grey mares one is now 18 and the other 22

my boy has one in his mouth which has been their for years, he is 15 yrs it doesn`t intrude to much in his mouth and i`m still riding.
But I would be wary about taking a horse on with them though.

lynette, you say you have two greys, but do they have melanoma's and if so have they been any trouble?

Hi Di
The grey that is 22 had melanoma's when I took her on as a 15 year old, has bred 2 foals and is now in foal again. These melanoma's are under her tail and have grown slightly over the last 7 years but do not interfere with her being able to breed, neither have they caused her any problems. It is something that is very common in greys due to the lack of pigmentation. The other grey who is now 18 shows no signs as yet. Quite honestly if you like the horse you tried then go for it.

Mmm, I can see your point of view lynette, but having known a couple of friends who had to have their horses (greys) put down with melanomas, I'd be a bit wary myself! I'm not saying I wouldn't have them, but I'd definitely be cautious - it would depend on price, what vet said - I wouldn't consider taking horse on without a vet having looked at them. Bear in mind that if they are melanomas, that will affect any insurance you might take out on vets bills.

My shettie mare has them but not under her tail. She has a cluster on her right base of neck and a golf ball sized lump on her right rum. I've had her two years and I can't see that they have got any bigger in that time - she's 15. However she is basicly un-insurable and the premium would have been so high that it just isn't viable to insure her (my other two are). In fact the excess would be £250 anyway, apart from the usual stuff her only vet bill so far was £80 so its still cheaper not to insure her.
Would the vendor agree to you talking to her vet about the horse's history re the growth rate etc? If the tumour appeared rapidly I would certainly be very cautious but if the horse has had it for years them I would not discount him/her just on the basis of the melanoma.

Di I had a pony with melanomas & although he was ok for years ultimately they kiiled him. My view is that if you want this horse purely as a riding horse then I would consider it subject to a vet's opinion. If you're the type of person who gets very attached to her horses then save yourself a lot of potential heartache & worry & look for something else. I know things go wrong with any horse but why buy a potentially serious problem? Of course this is just my opinion & I'm very strongly biased on this subject so maybe not the best person to listen to.

Thank you for all your comments they have been very helpful. I really liked the horse but i am the sort that would worry all the time about it and get attached. I had thought about the insurance aswell. I feel quite cross now that the owner never mentioned it at all. It took 2 hrs to get there and after riding her and asking lots of questions she stil didnt mention it. Luckily i noticed. I will look for something else.
