My horse has always been classed as cold backed. He displayed all of the usual signs of being cold backed, hunching up, bunny hoping for a few strides etc etc
Various people have always said that there is no such thing as a 'cold back' and it is a symptom of pain.
Being the worrying type I got out a couple of 'back' people to look at him. They found nothing wrong with the back at all.
Saddle checked. Fine!
Teeth checked. Fine!
So, got out a lovely lady who does Bowen. She found the cause of the problem. A slightly rotated hip! My horse was suspicious of what she was doing to start with as he was expecting it to hurt all the time. But now, problem is fixed! Horse is happy! And most importantly of all doesn't show any signs of being 'cold backed'!!!
So, if your horse shows signs of being 'cold backed' get someone out to check the whole horse and not just the back and saddle!!! My poor boy had been working for some time in quite a lot of discomfort and pain! Bless him.. he didn't complain once!

My friend had a similar problem with her horse as he bucked when cantering. She also got a lady thet did Bowen and the problem was found. Not as good an outcome for this horse as he can never be cantered due to an old untreated injury and is now just used for slow hacks out and that is on a good day.. So glad your boy is sorted out.

Glad you got sorted:) I would look a bit of askance at the 'back' people you had out, surely they looked at the whole horse rather than just the back by itself? My horse has just had a similar tweak during our 6 monthly check.

We have a filly which is slightly funny. she not long broke and she was a cruelty. We have to put the saddle on her for an hour before taking her out and lunging her if she hasn't been rode in a week. And when riding her sometimes she humps. But saying that she only started this under saddle about 6 weeks ago, and she seems pottery on her two front feet, no cause for it, and won't even canter just humps her back. Vet was out today and can find no reason for front bilateral lameness, done flexion test and hoof testers and gave her a good examining said maybe foot sore, not even a bruised sole, and shes had shoes on for last 6 months. She was riding perfect about 6 weeks ago even begginners were riding her. walk trot canter no probs. and hacking quietly down the roads then all of a sudden she went buck mad and lame so something is up. won't even tolerate the saddle tightening. We have a good physio so maybe give her a ring.
