Hi, I'm thinking of getting a 2.4 turbo diesel Toyota Surf. Do you think this would be powerful enough to pull 2 horses (550kg and 640kg) in a 10 year old Rice trailer ? Also can anyone tell me roughly how much it costs to get a tow bar fitted ? Thanks.

We recently bought a Isuzu Big Horn 3.1 after looking at 2.56 surfs. We were told by several sources not to bother with the 2.5 surf as it wasn't a good engine for the size of the vehicle - it is a beast! Only go for the 3.1 surf. By the way our Big Horn is now for sale!(No fault of it's own!!) It is in Somerset and price around £4k with new towbar and 30,000 miles on clock!!

ive got a 3litre turbo imported diesel surf, it pulls my ifor williams trailer well, you'd hardly know it was behind you, from experience its a much better truck all round than a discovery and pulls better too.
Not sure about the 2.5, sorry i cant be of more help

I was told to avoid Surfs due to head gasket problems, dont know if this is true but it put me off a bit, got abutt ugly Terrano instead.
Does the job though.

i posted earlier saying i had one, my hubby is a mechanic and has worked on allsorts, when we looked into buying a truck he told me i only had 2 choices either a mitsubushi or a toyota as all else were rubbish for various reasons, hes never heard of surfs being bad with head gaskets and hes worked on quite a few as he is employed by a 4 x 4 company who deals in everything

Ick, My husband and i own a garage so speak from experience, if you are planning on getting a surf do not buy the 2.4 one as these aren't very good, the 3 litre one is bombroof, manual is better than auto as the gear oil tends to get hot when towing with the automatic one
With regards to a towbar you can buy one from ebay from towequipe for about £100, a rough estimate to fit would be 3 to 4 hours labour depending on your garage you use (we would charge £20 an hour)
Hope that this has helped

I had a Toyota double cab pickup surf - imported 2.9 diesel. Pulled wonderfully well and I didn't have any problem with cylinder head gaskets either. They are heavy so 2.4 might be a little under powered. Parts are expensive though when you start needing them but they are oh so reliable.

I have a Toyota 2.4 Deisel Auto. I've had it for over 2.5 years and brought it to basically transfer all my doggie friends about. I've used it to tow once when collecting Magic from Hull (about 180 mile round trip) and I also use it to tow my tipper trailer full of horse manure to the farmers yard which is up a very steep hill!! In the winter this can be once a week. I think it is bl**y ugly. However, it does a decent job, has never let me down once and has been pretty economical on the whole. The tow bar I had fitted was dual one (ball and pin) and it was just short of £300. I'd have another surf anyday.
