My 2 yo filly has ominous, not particularly soft lump and not big yet. It's not yet Splint shape and spreads over her flexor tendon and towards the cannon bone, she isn't noticeably lame. Typical I'd put brushing boots on before she went out in a new field too! Anyone tried remedies that work? So far I've bandaged magnets on. Tried goose grease - anyone else done that one. And tried Splintex.. no reduction yet. If it is the "S" word, I'm hoping I've caught it as newly forming.

if the splint is new it will reduce in size in time some horses are lame when first forming but not all, as she is young she has time on her side, but as you boot her i assume she comes in at night so maybe being out 24/7 she will be less energentic so less likey to harm herself. but if you are unsure get you vet to give her the once over

When my girl was two she did something similar. I rubbed it with comfrey oil twice a day and it vanished over the next few weeks. It might have gone by itself anyway, but I felt better for doing something!

Thanks folks for reassurances. At least the Comfrey wil go with the goose grease and won't be an irritant I imagine. I feel sorry for them when trying the irritant type remedies, it must be uncomfortable. I'll persevere with the magnetic band too. What are we to do, every year the ground is soo hard and unrelenting for these youngsters. One can't stop them playing and tearing about while they're out, plus we've bloomin' rabbits starting to dig the place up. A couple of friends' youngsters have started splints just turned out, pre starting any work. Thanks Thunderstprite, as the lump is an odd shape, I might well take her up to the vets in case it's something more sinister.

My horse had a small splint when I bought him at 2, I know he had been lunged and long reined. I did no more work with him and it disappeared and now he is 7 there is no sign of a splint (the last time I looked!).
In the past I have used Radiol spirit lotion on an older horse and it did work, although it took some time.

How do all these lotions and potions work on reducing splints?

I asked a specialist horse vet today how to reduce splints and he said to try IBULEVE GEL. He also said if any sign of irritation to stop using straight away. Said to apply 3 times a day.
