With all our youngsters we start from the first week opening their mouths and feeling their teeth, we do this about twice a week during grooming time, and by the time they are ready to have their teeth looked at (approx 2years old) we can feel back and find any hooks or spurs. We also pick their feet up from week three and every time the blacksmith comes he picks up their feet and gently files them, hey presto its the norn and they never worry about having their feet done. I feel that if a foal grows up to believe that these sorts of things happen to them all the time you have a well adjusted youngster and he grows up into a well adjusted adult.

The dentist looks at ours right from the start. I have him out regularly anyway, so it makes sense that all ours learn that he will be looking at them while he's there. It's rare that they need much done before about 2 or 3 years old. The youngest we've had anything done to was a yearling, and the dentist just used his little thumb rasp to take a sharp edge down, only took a few secs, no gag, and no charge, bless him!

As has been said, more as a training thing than for the need of actual dental attention, having an EDT go through the motions of checking their teeth as foals is a good idea. Strange things go in the mouth and come out again, no big deal. Getting them checked early then regularly does also mean that, if there is a problem, it's spotted early.
