My mare has always been the hormonal type and I've tried various supplements to ease the seasons in the past. She has at one stage been on Regumate - not a route I want to particularly go back down though....
However, the problem is that I have to lead her past the edge of a field containing some geldings. This is a narrow track at the side of the geldings' field, with a hedge one side and a post and rail fence the other.
Sometimes there are different geldings in the field depending on the time of day mine is turned out, and these geldings are not turned out with mares, and so only on occasion chat to them over the fence. The geldings can reach over the p+r fence as you are leading past. This is hampered by the fact that my mare in season can be overly fruity, and will try and back up, ie, so that her rear end is literally being offered to the geldings! She's positively up for it! Circling is not practical due to space and backing her up - well
At the weekend, having made it past the geldings on the track, I turned her out, and on Saturday, one gelding literally tried to mount her over the fence and on Sunday another gelding wasn't far off the same - literally didn't know what to do with themselves, in such a lather! She was loving it! I scolded them verbally and hung around until things had simmered down and the horses found the grass more interesting. I was concerned that if things got out of hand, horses would be jumping or climbing over fences and I can't see the YO putting up electric fencing!
What on earth can I do? (I checked the fencing between fields to ensure it was robust) Supplements will only maybe help her moods, not stop her from coming into season and asking these handsome young men round for coffee and afters?
She is turned out in a small mixed herd.
Any thoughts?
