After reading all the fantasic stories about horses and riders I thought you might like to hear about me and Rosie. I bought Kassah as a 3yo from an Arab stud a year ago, very cheaply and only because I had at least two people who worked professional with horses. She was re-named Rosie as I wanted a 'comfortable' name and not a posh one. She was well mannered when I go her and after she had settled in my friend started her English. I watched and decided I didn't like this method for Rosie. There was nothing wrong with it but I wanted something I could be more involved with. I had done a bit of Parelli (no I'm not a fanatic follower but it has it good bits), looked into natural horsemanship and Western. SO, I took out the bit, used my pressure halter and 12' line and did lots of groundwork. got western saddle on and did more ground work. Rode with parelli halter and reins, then headcollar and two lead ropes, then got side pull off e-bay. Had some lessons (which I will continue when he has time) with a western trainer.
Because of work and other committements plus somedays not feeling great, progress has not been constistant and until two weeks ago she had not been touched for about 6 weeks as she had her teeth out, we went on holiday and then she lost a shoe.
But on Tuesday we went out for our first hack all on our own! Must admit I wore my body protector! The car drivers were unusually helpful. She hadn't seen all the fields cut and we did have problems getting over the edge into the fields but when she realised there wasn't monsters hiding under the bits of straw she was fine. Then we went into a field and there was a man with a metal detector, we walked and trotted round the straw bales but then along came a lady leading a frisky pony with a big dog. Rosie is on her own at the moment but she just went up on her toes and carried on doing what I asked. I got a yell to say how well she looked. Next field was a bright orange scarecrow. On the way home she went down a drop of about 12" 15". We are totally the wrong combination, young horse, lady nearly 60 who has only had two horses who didn't start until in her forties and has never done anything like this. I would love to post a picture I keep trying but it never works!
I think this forum gives lots of people lots of encouragement. There are a few who have all the amenities but most are like me who make do and mend and do the best they know or can find out for their animals. So keep up the good work!
