I know this one has been done before but with this being a new board and mine is up for renewal I thought i would ask again! What insurance companies do you use/not use and why? Mine premiums seem to have jumped up quite a lot from last year so I have been doing some phoning round today. Pet plan seem cheap. Are they any good? Are the dreaded A & L still dreaded? Or perhaps you don't insure? If not why not? Thanks folks! Sarah x

I insure mine with the NFU - as well as the dog, the car and the contents of the house!
They're quite reasonable price-wise, in fact the more you insure with them, the greater the discount. They're also happy to lump it all together so it comes out as one big payment. Easier to budget for!
I have to say, I haven't had to claim for the horse (thank God) however we did put a claim in on the dog last year, and we've had to claim on the contents insurance once this year. They were brilliant on both occasions, didn't ask any stupid questions or try and wiggle out of paying, and the premiums haven't shot up in consequence.
I've heard some bad reports re Pet Plan, but have no experience with them. I've heard good things about SEIB too.

I have to agree with Jenna. We use NFU. Weve had vets out to the horses on a number of occasions. NFU have paid out regardless. They have been both friendly and compassionate on the phone, are always helpful and are quite resonably priced considering the service they offer. They also have a loyalty scheme which give you discounts. We have 4 out of 5 horses with them. (The 5th is with PetPlan but we've never had to claim, so I can't comment on them)

Yup, NFU here too. They've been good payers for claims, very helpful on the phone - even telling me of extras I could claim for that I didn't know about, reasonable on premiums. I'm happy with them for now.
They've been good about exclusions too - if an injury or illness occurs, they will put an exclusion on, but will lift it after a year, or if the vet says its unlikely to reoccur.

And another vote for NFU! Have always been very pleased with the service and they are competitive re cost. Never had any problems with them paying up, and went through a year of continual injuries with my horse a while back!

I use pet plan and have never had any problems and have claimed they always have processed the claim quickly
My dogs are insured with the Dog breeders one and they took about 8 months to process my claim
Have heard bad things about E & L And a friend is having real trouble with SEIB

Petplan and KBIS for the horses and NFU for the dog.

Petplan are good, although they do put on some very broad (and fairly unreasonable)exclusions if your horse has anything wrong. So it is best to ask exactly what they would do if your horse has had any past problems. I've never heard of any problems with claim paying though, to the best of my knowledge they are very good at that.

We use NFU as the premium via SEIB had shot up this year (by over £130) despite never having had to claim. Also, when I took a policy out via SEIB last year we should have got six months subscription to Your Horse included FOC, but have never received the mags. This is despite it having been confirmed in writing by SEIB on two occasions!
The premium with NFU was far more competitive, offered more cover than the renewal policy via SEIB and they were extremely easy to deal with.
Have no experience of Pet Plan regarding horses, but have our two bearded collies insured with them and found them excellent when our youngest beardie had to have veterinary treatment.

Another vote for NFU. I've got all my insurance with them. Fortunately haven't as yet had to claim.

I'm in the process of insuring with KBIS although they have managed to lose my cheque - sigh! I was with NFU and luckily never had to claim but if you insure with KBIS when your horse is under 12 they will continue to insure them for illness up to the age of 19 which I thought was pretty good.

I'm with Petplan and have never had any problems with them, horse or dog. I'm amazed you say they were cheap though! I've found they are amongst the most expensive but I haven't found cover I'm happy with elsewhere.

Thanks for all your opinions. I am currently have all my horses with NFU but as the premium went up a bit this year I thought I would phone round for some quotes. Some were a bit more, some were the same and some a bit less!!! Pet Plan were quite a bit less though! I will have to leave my oldest horse with NFU though as they will keep him on full cover until he is 19 as we have been with them for quite a while now. Hummmm, some thinking to do then... Sarah x
