If a horse turns up at the local horse market without a passport, the passport agency comes out and does it while it's in the pen waiting to go through the ring. I can't see how the things passports came in for can work in this situation. Certainly doesn't help anyone who's horse is stolen.

robbo didnt know they did that , this wont really help for stollen horses though will it?they will just be given a new identity. i would be wary of someone selling a horse with no passport though, i know lots of people dont have their horses passports and have never needed to but i always make sure i have one for mine

Well, on my passports you have to send them away to change ownership details. All details are printed and it clearly states that any ammendments made that are not overstamped are false ;D

Is there anywhere which actually states the laws about passports? I'm lucky enought to have owned ex-racers so I haven't had to worry about getting whole new ones!

There is a lot about passports on the Defra website - follow the links to the horse pages. personally, I think that reputable sales should not accept any horse without a passport, much as the Sport horse breeding (GB)sales have been doing for years. If vendors send in an entry, they should be made to quote the horse's lifetime ID and this can easily be checked on arrival.

Definately not carrying mine round with me, I'm hopeless, I'll probably lose it.
Good that checks are being made though.

A passport is for identity purposes only, it is not proof of ownership. ID passports usually show the name and address of owner but a Breed Passport normally only shows the name of the person who bred the animal concerned. The Breed Registration papers show the name and address of owner and are proof of ownership.
