After much discussion with my OH, I've convinced him the need for a trailer and I can't see us buying another vehicle for towing so he's trying to compromise by buying an Ifor 401 Single Horse trailer.
He's looked up all the specs for the car - its a Citreon Picasso 1.6HDi diesel Max Tow weight of 1300. My horse is 525kg at the moment - has been up to 560kg in the past using a weigh tape.
770kg is weight of trailer Max. Gross Weight 1600kg
am I being over cautious here? Any problems towing a single trailer? According to the Ifor website it is suitable for towing behind many larger family cars.

Could you get your horse down to a weigh-bridge? I don't know whether it's such a good idea towing right on a cars weight limit (if my speedy maths is right). Have you looked at other trailers? Rice trailers are good and I'm not sure whether the wooden floors would make them lighter than the Ifors..?

I was also told not to touch single trailers, apparently they tip more easily than a double. Wouldnt your car really struggle if you hit some mud at a show pulling a trailer? We towed with a 1.6 van once (donkeys years ago) and the trailer snaked all over the place then we had to unload it because it got stuck on wet grass! My pony was not amused!

Wouldnt even consider it - especially not with a lightweight car

Sorry, I couldn't resist, I tried, but I've failed... Most people tow with a car!

LOL Heidi!! We tow our Rice trailer with a Honda Accord. It is a very lightweight trailer and easy to tow but we can only have one pony in it. We've decided to sell both of our cars and buy a 4x4 instead, partly for peace of mind and partly because I'd like to able to tow both ponies at once.

No. I wouldn't use a single trailer. They are more inclined to tip over, hence coffin box. two horse trailers are much safer and i agree with others above that you really need a bigger car. Better to be safe than sorry. Another thought, instead of buying a single trailer can you buy a small lorry, i dont know about prices but this would eliminate the need to sell the car if OH doesnt want to. I dont know about costs but it may be a thought, you could also transport others in it for a fee.
