My horse has suddenly developed a strange lump on his chest where the girth would go. It's about the size of a fist (so quite big) and is hard to touch. It's also obviously very sore.
I can't see any broken skin and havent a clue what it could be. I'm going to get the vet out tomorrow but was wondering if anyone on here had an idea?
He seemed fine yesterday, I rode him and girthed him up without a problem and there definitely wasn't any swelling then.

could he have been kicked there? Mine had a big lump on his shoulder once, no broken skin but definately a kick!! I expect it will have gone down abit by the morning, best to get a vet out for a check over and some anti-inflammatories anyway!

Well that's what it sounds like it would be, but he's turned out on his own.
So unless he's managed to pick a fight with the horses in the field next door... !

It could be a fly bite that has swollen up, though that isn't common at this time of year.

I agree with Anon it sounds to me like a Girth Gall.

Well I've just had the vet out and he's not sure what it is either. The lump has got bigger today and is extremely sore - even if you gently run your fingers along it poor horse flinches.
He thinks it's most likely some sort of infection/abcess. And I've been given antibiotics to try and see if it goes down. Otherwise he'll have to go for a scan. At the moment the 'worse' prognosis is that it is a deep seated abcess - which the antibiotics won't help in the long term and will need a operation to drain. : (

there are some strange flies around this year, i had to get the vet out to look at my horses belly button!. it swelled up to the size of an orange and he thought that was a weird fly bite. it went down after abit, but it was strange. i was abit worried in case it was a hernia.
hope your horses lump gets better. sometimes its hard to put your finger on the exact cause!! ( i'm sure my horse develops odd things to just keep my nerves on edge!!! )
