My heavily coated cob has got rainscald. He occasionally has a tiny bit, but he has got a bit more this year. I've rugged him now as he seems to be getting it more often, and he doesn't usually have it this time of year. The other horses haven't got any at all. I can't believe that only he's got it. Has any of yours got it?

No Leanne, but I understand it can help, when they are living unrugged, to groom as little as possible, but to make sure to "fluff up" the fur along their backs, with something like a plastic brush or curry comb. This stops them getting those sort of channels in their fur where the cold rain can collect.

When we had to 'rescue' our old Arab mare back from her retirement home (well known horse charity), she came back with horrible rain scald as well as other skin conditions. We had the vet out to have a good look at her and he said that one of the reasons for the rain scald is that her immune system was compromised and that she was run down. We immediately started adding echinacea to her feed and taking great care with her. My vet also said that another reason for skin conditions is over rugging.
Birdie has fully recovered now but it's taken almost a year, like KAS we rug as little as possible and let her skin breathe and let herself keep maintain her own temperature which she does very well!
