Hey all, My mum has posted a thread on horse health, but we havent had 2 many responces. My new boy had mites im his feathers when we bought him, but recently he has started scatching loads on his body. He is getting really frustrated with it, and i feel so bad watching him. We have washed his feathers out a wile back with hibi scub, which seemed to work, but only for a few days. We also bouhgt some louse powder which we put on his feathers, but this just irritated hissebsitive skin and made the matter a whole load worse! I have been taking his rug off every day wile we have had sunny weather so he can have a good role and an itch. Some one has mentioned an injection the vet can give him a course of that will kill off any mites. We have cleaned all his rugs, brushes, riding stuff etc after we have de loused him, but he seems to be getting worse by the day. The other day he tryed to get down and roll with me on him! Any advice would be great, i may need to get the vet out 2muro to sort it out, as its not nice for him at all.
xxxx merry christmas all xxx

If you think it is lice than ask your vet about frontline... although not yet 'prescribed' for horses most vets will happily let you have some for 'another' animal! It kills all lice, failing that you could always try headlice solution, just test a small bit first. I think mites need an injection although Frontline may work on them too... off to read the packet!!! Hope you have a helpful vet.

Hi Jem
My horse had really itchy legs a number of years ago and rubbed them raw. The vet came out and discovered he had mange, which he probably got from a passing fox. I was prescribed a wash intended for cats and dogs. I had to wash immediately and then wash again 5 days later. Hope you get your poor neddy sorted out Nina

get the vet to give the injection jem, we had ours done the other week coz she kept scratching her legs and knocking her chestnuts off - injection sorted it immediately and its not expensive.

my horse is irritated by some kind of mite/insect in the summer, we treat with hibiscrub, dry then spary some BARRICADE on the affected area, you can buy Barricade from vet surgeries (or they can order it in) it's an australian preparation, and works very well. Must use rubber gloves when handling though, and can only be used every 7 - 10 days.

hey all, emma had the injections done this morning. The vet reckons it will take 24 hours before it has any effect, and is coming to give him another one in exactly a weeks time. Fingers crossed for barney xxxxxx
