Get your friend to speak to their vet. It would be a good idea to measure how much water he is drinking, over a certain time period as the vet will want to know that (ie measure how much the bucket holds and then multiply it by the numbers of buckets drunk). It could be a kidney problem or in an older horse it could be a sign of Cushings. No point in guessing, though, best to speak to the vet. Hope this helps

Don't know. Is there a good water supply in the field where he is turned out? Has he eaten the salt lick? Is he doing a lot of exercise and getting very hot and sweaty? I would think this needs checking out by a vet it it goes on for more than a day or two.
My horse was once away being broken in the the trainer rang up to say something similar, he was drinking an awful lot. I got the vet and he dosed him for liver fluke, which he had got from the fields where I kept him that had had sheep in. This was 25 years ago now, and I think farmers are far more particular about worming their animals now than the farm I was on.

the only thing I know is that abnormal thirst is a major indicator for cushings. definitely get the vet out asap if there's no apparent reason for this thirst. any other symptoms?

I wouldn't hang about on this - call the vet out immediately. This sounds completely abnormal to the usual amount this horse drinks and you mention that feeds and hay are being soaked as usual. So something sounds badly wrong to me. Hope everything is okay.

I would call the vet if he is drinking every bucket down that you offer. Is he stabled? stabled horses do drink down their buckets if they are left to get empty or stale. My horse is drinking more at the moment because theres little moisture in the frozen grass (he has hay in his field) he also has more hay in his stable at night and so drinks more. While you are waiting for the vet I would offer him a bucket with electrolites in it, as he may be a bit dehydrayted for whatever reason. Is he tucked up or quite normal in himself? Kindney problems are often shown by the need to drink more.

Sounds a bit suspect. Diabetics drink a lot and if I'm right Cushings can cause diabetes. As everyone has said the vet is your best bet ASAP.
