Hiya,
My 32yo pony is feeling VERY well right at the moment, and this translates to him being a pain in the behind to lead. I was wondering if people had any suggestions!
He pulls and walks on top of you. He's led in a knotted headcollar, just as bad, if not worse in a bridle, but won't run off - he just wants to walk at top speed! He has one of the fastest walks in the world!!
I have to lead him with another pony all the time as there are two of them and one of me - they are stabled at night, turnout during the day. The other pony naturally walks slowly. Other pony is completely halter-broken as per Monty RA. Fizz has had several leading lessons, but sulks and strops and stresses if I try any of the same techniques on him. He is very joined up naturally, but thinks he has to lead in-front of me.
He's fed only a scoop of conditioning nuts the rest is fibre (short chop, high fiber nuts and speedibeet, no teeth). So nothing to cut out there. Exersise is just turnout - would love to ride him, he's well up for it but I'm intolerant of his stride pattern!! Makes me very ill. I intend to get him out after christmas and see if he still makes me so ill. It's so far been impossible to get someone else to ride him - he has v bad reputation in the area, is only 13.3hh and strong and needs a very good, quiet, lightweight rider - they don't exist!!
To get to and from field it is a 300m walk hence the problem, leading him short distances no worries. My friend took him out with me on my youngster the other day and he towed her for 1 1/2m, I led him off Cirrus on the way back - hardly ideal on a young horse (though he was great!). Can't do the usual backing and circling techniques with Fizz as he has some stiffness in his hip/pelvis area. He's sound but I am wary.
Thanks for reading!! Suggestions gratefully received!
