We had a livery come to us and when he first came he did not crib or windsuck. He had done this very very badly at his last yard. But guess what he started doing it again. Even when he was turned out. He could not stop himself.
He now have a result. Over the last week we have put him in the open barn nextdoor to the cows and he has not done this once. We think it is because he has company and something interesting to look at. Can't believe how he has changed and looks so much happier.

Brilliant Mark! I'm keen to know a bit more about this.
The fact that he didn't do it straight away could indicate that the new surroundings kept him interested. (I'm assuming that there are other horses around as you said "new livery")
Then he started again (did he get used to and bored with his new surroundings?).
Now that you've introduced cows he has something to focus on again. Do you think he'll get bored of them too?
Does he get out and about much?
Sorry for bombarding you with questions but it is something I am very interested in.

sorry to jump on your post Mark - What is the supplement others have given to windsuckers?? We have one who does this with gusto, seems particulary intesnse after his feed.

my friend used settlex which I think is made by feedmark, not sure it helped but her horse was a chronic cribber

Try feeding a high fibre diet only, no cereals.

I was poster at 11:27 - I feed this pony ad lib haylage and he has HI FI and ALfa A mixed (large bucketful) at feedtime (with a balancer and beet). He has a nice routine with at least 6 hours turnout each day - he NEVER windsucks in the field. Neither does he do it when out in the horsebox. He appears almost manic about it after eating - will try settlex!!

Michael Peace did some research into this and found a physical problem is behind some of it - stomach acid mainly. Give him a call or email. Sure he'd be able to suggest a supplement.

My mare does this a lot. I got her Settlex for a trial month, didn't think it made much difference so didn't bother getting her any more. Now sadly she windsucks as well and the cribbing increased no end poor thing.
Guess what I've just got a two month tub of...must be really good. I just hope it doesn't wear off as I have heard it does after a while.

I have good results in reducing crib biting in a chronic case. I've upped the other thread which gives some more info.
