I just wanted to share with those of you that have given me advice on my mare some progress..
As you may remember a few weeks ago I was besides myself after she went lame after finishing her course of Naviolx (she was sound on Navilox) after being diagnosed with Navicular.
On the vets recommendation we put her on Cosequin and withing 3 weeks we have seen a massive improvement - in fact she is going better now than she was on the Navilox.
She is 110% sound and very forward going out riding, which is a massive relief to me. We have the old Betty back! who is up for it bouncing about like a bull as she is full of spring grass!!
I can't ride at the moment due to bad back but my friend is taking her to Chatsworth House this Sunday to do the sponsored ride there, just the short one.... So you have been warned about a bull on the lose in advance!!
As for the Cosequin this I will take out a mortgage to fund that as she is going to be averaging a £250 tub every 6 weeks, I have found some in America so am hoping that is comparable.
A very Happy Lou!

Hi,
So glad to hear your results with Cosequin. I use it on my youngster for cartilage damage he has to one of his fetlocks. It is by far the best joint supplement I have ever used and because of it the damage he has, has not gotten any worse.
Just thought I would post my thoughts and also let you know that I am from America. I buy my cosequin for about $165 (not sure what that amounts to where you are) and it lasts me around 6-8 months. Cosequin seems expensive because you have to buy it in a large quantity all at once. But it tends to last quite awhile and really if I break it down monthly I am only spending around $25 a month, which is not any more than most other joint supplements. I am very lucky to have someone else at my barn who uses it, so rather than spending $165 all at once we split the cost of a large container and share it. I have also found that it works really, really well when combined with MSM.

Nicole - I assume that you are in the states? The best site I have found so far if www.agrimed.com they seem quite cheap abour $170 for 1400gms. Over here I am paying £250 through the vets for 700gms.

Really interested to read this - my mare was diagnosed with Navicular just yesterday, i am absolutely heartbroken.
She's just starting on the intial bute and 12 weeks of Navilox but i am desperate for advice.
What exactly is Cosequin, what does it contain and how does it work? Is it harmful for long term use?
Sorry for the questions!!

Natalie - I was the same as you, devastated would be able to ride anymore blah blah.... My mare also has side bone that showed up on her x-rays.
Cosequin is for long term use when the navilox has finished and without it my mare wasn't 100% sound. It was recommended by my vet and also another lady on my yard uses it. There are no harmful affects from it. Cosequin contains glucosamine (sp) along with some other stuff as well, nit got tub here so can't check.. Do a search on the net as there is loads of info on it.. Im currentky getting it through my vet until my insurance runs out.. When it does I will be getting it from a co in America that is a lot cheaper than what the vets charge over here.
Good Luck and try not to look on the bleak side, I really do know how you feel and things may not be as bad as you think.

Cosequin is similar to cortaflex etc in that it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, but the amounts and purity of the ingredients appear to be better than the cheaper supplements. Sunny was on it when she was diagnosed with coffin joint pain and the results were excellent. I think you can buy some from eBay to svae money.
Natalie if you look it up on google you should find all the info you want on how it works etc.

Thanks for your replies.
She has gone straight on Seaweed, Limestone, Cod liver oil and magnetic hoof boots. The vet has put her on 3 weeks of bute and when she has finished on that i will invest in a good joint & cartilage formula and a more natural pain relief.
He is coming back out to see her in 3 weeks and i will certainly mention the Cosequin to him then, it sounds like its definately worth a try.
Can i ask how you mare is shod Lou?

Natalie - I presume that your mare has gone on bute because she is badley lame? We skipped this with my mare and put her straigh on a 12 week course of Navilox along with 3 injections of Hyonate at weekly intervals.
Be careful with the magnetic hoof boots and Navilox as the drug in Navilox increases the blood flow to the hoof you don't want to over do it...
I cannot recommend the Cosequin enough it really is worth every penny and the results far exceed those of the off the shelf supplements. Once on it my vet advises that it can also prevent the Navicular from getting any worse.
Since being diagnosed with Navicular I have had my mare shod with Natural Balance Shoes, and these have really worked well. I have had them with quarter clips on the front though to hold the shoe more securely in place as she bombs round in the field!
With all this combination my mare is sound as a pound (touch wood) and has done some jumping in the arena so a good surface and I am hoping to do some showing on her again this season. I will need to chose where I go so that I know the ground is good. This is all since December when she was diagnosed
Lou
PS - the person seeling Cosequin on Ebay is the supplier I have sourced.. Compare their prices to the £250 the vet will charge you for 700grams.

Funnily enough, no, she's not badly lame. It is very slightly on one leg on a small circle when you notice it and it is only 2/10 i would say.
I'll maybe speak to the vet and ask about reducing the amount of time she stays on the bute.....
Thanks for the advice about the boots, i will start using them after the course of Navilox has finished.
I was just going to put them on ove night in the stable. She is going to a new yard on the 1st July where she will have more turnout.
The vet also recommended i continue riding her 3 times a week to help with circulation?
I have looked for a NB farrier, i am in East Yorkshire, the nearest ones to me are in Lincolnshire and Richmond - both atleast 50 miles away.
I am contemplating ringing for advice and perhaps boxing her and meeting a farrier halfway.
I have seen some Cosequin on the net in the US, $160 for 1400 grams.
I better get saving !!

Im in SOuth Yorkshire not sure if my farrier would travel that far out but can put you in touch with him...
Don't forget that $160 is about £90 and on a maintenance dose that 1400gm should last you 5-6 months so no more really than a standard supplement buying it that way.
I would look at the reasons for the bute my mare was 3/10 lame on a circle that is how we noticed her problem no bute just straight on the navilox..... Check it out.
Keep her turned out as much as possible as the moving around will help with circulation - could she stay out all the time? especially on the Navilox as this is what my vet advised to get best results so mid december rugged up to the nines she was out and responded really well.

No one has discussed foot balance.
No matter what is given regards medication. The foot has to be in balance.
I suggest you get a book called
Navicular Explained and it will explain, if caught early and I imagine it has it can be all sorted out long term not only by help of medication ( as that is not the answer long term if not addressed, what is causeing it) you can see success in a horse who will come back to full use.
I speak from experience.
Not all NB farrier fit the NB shoes correctly, so another reason to seek knowledge yourself.
It is not only a shoe it has to be to a correctly balanced foot and applied correct ( note not heated and altered) and kept in check long term.

Your horse may benefit from some natural hoofcare. Apart from enhancing the health of your horse your bank balance will be a lot healthier for it too.
There is also a natural horsetrim yahoo group. Its very supportive and there are loads of peole on there who have had their horses with navicular and their horses are now fine. Why don't you"drop in"?

Anon - i do realise the importance of correct foot balance but initially she needs some form of pain relief.
I know the root cause is whats going on in her foot and no amount of drugs will cure it or even provide long term help unless it is addressed.
I desperately want to help her but is so difficult to know what to do next, especially with so much conflicting advice around!
Thanks HH for the link.
I ordered Navicular Explained on Friday so hopefully it should arrive this week.
Lou, it would be brill if you could put me in touch with your farrier.
