Subject : Thunder causing colic??

one of the horses on the yard had colic the other night and the farmer was chatting about how he has noticed that this often happens when there is a thunderstorm. He's also had problems with cows, and says he's noticed laminitic ponies having problems when there's been thunder too.
Anyone else heard of this, or got any ideas what it might be?

Could only imagine it affecting them if the thunder scared them and they then tore around the field on a belly full of feed or something. Interesting observation though.

the horse that got colic was in his stable after the storm. Also farmer has had cows/horses for 40 years and says he has noticed it frequently and it's more to do with afterwards than with "damaging" themselves during the actual storm. He thinks that the thunder somehow alters the grass. I know there's something scientific about ions(?) in the air, but that sort of thing is beyond my very unscientific brain.

Yes - I agree with Daisy. It is someting that I have noticed over the years. It seems to be associated with any major weather change but particularly thunder storms.

Interesting. I hadn't considered a change in grass etc. I wonder if any studies have ever been carried out on it. If not, perhaps someone should. Fascinating.

Interesting as my migraines get worse before a storm. I think asthmatics find that their symptoms worsenas well, soemthing to do with air pressure/anti cyclones i think

I remember a vet commenting on that as well though I don't think they new why but a definate observation that major changes in weather triggers colic attacks

This has happened to my own horse - a vet told me some horses are very sensitive to the changes you get in barometric pressure when it's thundery. He had a horse that was the same, it's not uncommon.

I wonder if fear could be a factor. We had a really bad thunderstorm a couple of weeks ago. We had to bring the ponies in, as they were behaving in a totally dangerous way (and afterwards we found that Corrie, who had been running and silpping had a slightly sprained fetlock. Once they were in, Corrie calmed down, but Mace was still very upset, and kept on walking round and round (over Corrie's pile of hay, which got him some foosty looks from Madam!) and he had nervous squits quite badly. It took about half an hour to get him properly calm, by which time the very worst of the storm was over.

My guess would be stress from the noises etc could trigger the attacks.

I'm not so sure it's fear/stress - sometimes just the change from hot weather to overcast can trigger it.

Prior to muggy weather/thunderstorms my epilepsy gets worse.
