Kelly has a chapter on how to get started in Perfect Partners. Start off first in a safe enclosed area, like a school, until you both get used to it.
You can long rein from a headcollar, though I use a Dually. You need 30 ft lines, to give you control and stay a safe distance behind. If you haven't got a suitable roller, use a saddle with breast girth and the stirrups down but hobbled to put the long reins through.
Once you incorporate long reining in your groundwork it soon becomes indispensible: you can watch your horse moving; work on both reins and do lateral work. It's the ideal way to teach the horse, before you try it on his back.

Ok I am running the risk of revealling that I am rubbish with my horses .... i had a go with my fell pony the other day (who incidentally is pretty stubborn and not very forward going) I attatched two lines to her head collar and stood behind her. i couldnt work out how to get her to go forwards (duh) she just kept turning round and standing on the lines. So can I have the long reining for dummies edition please

basically you just swish the lines and send them away, but i've worked with a jibby type horse who didn't want to go forward before and really struggled same as you. Don't have that problem with sherb lol!!
