Does anyone else think the price of shavings has rocketed this year? The stuff we are using at the moment is £6 (last year it was nearly a quid less) and seems to get wet and turn to dust within a couple of days, it's costing me a fortune!
Anyone in Cheshire know of anywhere to get decent affordable shavings?

yes, I agree!!!! I have been phoning round today, apparently there is a shortage at the mo. I found one place was £7.50 a bale!!!!!
Try abbots and co, they have a website, may cover your area.

i pay 50p a bag from a sawmill, for sawdust. I think for a proper bag there 5.50 which i guess is ok because i just buy a random bale here and there to mix into the sawdust. When we were in blackpool used to be able to go to sawmills and take shavings for free was great

Hi Melissa. You can always get a delivery from Hollies. We get a pallet of 24 at a time and i think they are just a few pence less than £6 per bale. Nice shavings too.

How many do you buy at a time? Where i am (scotland) they are £5.91 but if you buy 30 (a pallet) they are £4.80 a bale.

It's to do with a shortage of timber from somewhere abroad (or so I read!) It's also the reason why fencing is difficult to come across this year - or should that be last year!!

We don't have a lot of storage at our plce so usually only get 2 or 3 at a time. Last year there was a place that delivered and if you ordered more than 10 bales it was cheaper, so we shared them between. Unfortunately a lot of the other shave gone on to straw this year because of the shavings situation.
Intersting to hear there is a reason Diane, and it's not just my imagination!

yep over 6.00 a bale down here in south west and supplier said they are about to go up again - we get ours free from local wood yard but they are not producing much at moment so we will probably change one over to straw next week although my hubby hates mucking out a straw bed but at 1.50 a bale compared to 6.00 plus there is no comparison - will try and keep other mare on shavings as she eats the straw but am not paying those prices so it may be straw and jeyes fluid for her in the future as well

I was using Bedmax and payed £5.50 a bale but I think they've had a fire and my local feed store have ran out. A place a mile up the road has just started making shavings that are lovely. They are dust extracted and big flakes. I pay £3.50 plus vat for them

The price for woopchips has rocketed in Essex too. I try to only use Hunters, as I think they are the best, however our local feed merchant has stopped stocking them and another place is selling them at 7.00 a bag . I went to Ingatestone saddlery last week (which is a good 1/2hr drive from me) and they were selling them for 5.95 a bag and limiting them to 6 per vehicle (could only fit 3 in my Polo lol). Apparently, FinnForest, who produces Hunters, has had their work cut in half since November, hence the lack of woodchips

We dont use shaving, but something called Laysoft, cost 4.58 per bag, thats including vat and delivery. We do get 70 at a time though.
Forgot to say it is similar to Easybed and doesnt move round too much even with Jack the Shire.

My YO was complaining today that the price of shavings had gone up - along with the price of feed, hay haylege - which will result in my livery price going up from £380 per month to £430!!
