The only real case of starvation that I've heard of was actually the horse of the local rspca officer. She maintained that the horse was just naturally thin..... it had like 2 slices of hay for the entire night.....
Have to say I never saw it myself, but the lady who owned the livery yard that the rspca officer kept the horse at was utterly horrified.

If any of you are members of the Saddle-Up forum, there is a very long and detailed thread about a friend's two horses which were taken by the RSPCA, mistakenly reported as being neglected. She finally got them back after 13 weeks, after a long and difficult battle. Very sad and eye-opening tale. I will never support the RSPCA after that.

I lost faith in the RSPCA a couple of years ago. A car pulled in at the yard to say a pony was loose on the road. We went out to catch the pony to find a obese laminitic pony with feet that hadn't been trimmed for years. Walked the pony back to the yard and phoned the police and the RSPCA. Told the RSPCA we needed an officer out to look at the pony asap, which they promised they'd send. After several phone calls over the next few days we were still no further forward. At no point did they ask whether we had the facilities to keep the pony or how the pony was doing. Four days later the owner realised the pony was missing and phoned the police who put him in touch with me. The owner then agreed to sign him over to me - he had a very lucky escape. I had the vet out to check Pebbles over - the vet said that if he'd been called out to assess him by the RSPCA it would have been logged as a neglect case and the guy would have been prosecuted. Needless to say I never heard anything from the RSPCA. This was Pebs the day we found him

In the past i've had dealings with the rspca and everytime they've been a waste of time. The first was over my dogs when i started my job i had to leave my dogs at home from 7am until 8pm so thinking it best to rehome them i got intouch, luckily the receptionist listened to my story of them being 2 much loved family dogs and told me to steer clear as if collected they would be put to sleep the same day. Then while working at the riding school we had them come to see us the one day asking us if we knew who owned the coloured down the road, we didnt but we fetched him up and they asked us to look after him while they traced the owner. he had a huge hole in his side that smelled real bad. Anyway we had him for 2 weeks and looked after him as if he was our own. The rspca never visited/phoned once nor did they send a vet out. We had a vet visiting another pony so he looked at the coloured at no extra charge. Amonth or 2 passed and still no word from them so in the end after being fobbed off with another lie we did our own tracking down of the owner within a day we found them [they were in hospital] Also someone else told us they had seen a vet and the rspca down with the horse a week befor we took him so the rspca obviously just didnt want the responsibility of the poor horse. He went back to the owner who we later found out had left him shut in a horse box for several weeks with hardly any water or food, since then we've also heard other horror stories of this womans horses and the rspca still do nothing.

the rspca always seem to be over zealous with bogus calls but never seem to help when needed, we had 2 horses running around our village with over 100 calls to the rspca and police from different villagers nobody came out even though these horses were always galloping along a 60 mile an hour road i also remember when i worked at a rescue centre one horse came in that the rspca said was fine, it was emaciated and had to be shot that afternoon needless to say my faith in the rspca is not very high

Well, it does seem from all the posts on this subject, that I and my friends are not the only people unhappy with the actions of the RSPCA, or maybe I should say "Lack of action"
HAPPA, Horses and Ponys Protection Association are also just as useless. Infact, a few Years ago I was in conversation with the manager of their rescue centre at Shores Hey Farm, in Burnley, and was told that something untowards (can't say fraudulent) was happening, and thet they have a high turnaround of managers, as when they realise what is happening their contracts are terminated.
I was always under the impression that rescue centres were dedicated to the welfare of the animals, not the welfare of the owners pockets!
In this post I have been very careful not to make any statements that could be regarded in law as libel, I have merely expressed my personal opinion and the opinions verbally expressed to me.
So, RSPCA and HAPPA, don't think you are going to increase you coffers from anyone here!!!!!
You are a waste of time and space, and appear to be only intertested in publicity.

This is such a sad thread, because ultimately, if public confidence in the welfare organisations is lost, the only true losers are those animals at risk. If anyone is ceasing donations to those organisations, does that mean you are ceasing to donate at all, or finding somewhere else to channel the funds to? Because if the former is the case, we are going to find that animal welfare is one of those things that gets lost. Even though there is an Animal Welfare Act, if there is no-one to enforce it it might as well not exist.

I don't really like the RSPCA anymore, lost faith when they refused to even look at Milton The vet had said he wasn't terrible, 1.5 on the scale, and they'd only take him if he was 0.5! (or was that redwings?? can't remember, don't quote me!) They said they had dogs in hot cars to deal with He was 16.2hh, 20+ years old, in other words, big and expensive ILPH never answered the phone or got back to us, forgot about HAPPA Redwings wouldn't take him either. He went to Hillside animal sanctuary in the end, they took him Hes getting everything he needs from them and will never be rehomed, we can go and see him Milton on the first day we got him (we bought him) and four weeks later (a week before he left us to go to Hillside) Hillside get my full support They take any animal that they can and rely on public donations to run them all, but get all the animals everything that they need

Hey Jill,
It was Elaine at EMW who managed to get the RSPCA and HAPPA to go and look at the Pony in question, back in July/August of this Year....although it was a waste of time them looking, cos they did little or nothing, because it is in a similar state still..........still on mud, still neglected, and not fed properly/regularly etc etc....

But the pony will now be thinner unless it is getting fed, so they may now get involved. Try again.

We have a regular, pony sale here, it attracts buyers from all over, some more welcome than others. Most of the folk selling know who the dodgy bidders are and will not sell if the bid is with them. Sadly some sell to any bidder. One year these unsavoury elements were seen riding yearlings and 2 year olds in the car park, throwing foals over gates rather than opeining them and generally hauling ponies about in a very coarse manner. No sign of the SSPCA and the police and vets had gone home. It was left to other members of the public to tackle these folk, at their own risk and stop the cruelty. When the SSPCA man was tackled as to his absense, he said he wasn't invited to the sales.......now, I thought that the whole idea was that not everyone is going to invite him onto their property. We have made him up a beautiful formal, gold embossed invitation for next year. Head office were under the impression that two officers still travelled up specially for the sale. This stopped in in the 80's and they hadn't cottoned on! Head office will get the invite too.

Well I'm so angry right now I could spit fire. horsemadpeter - I feel awful for letting these ponies down yet again. I will get onto this straight away. We'll do the best we can but being a distance away is not easy. Can you PM/mail me any photo's- recent - of the pony. mail to emw@equinemarketwatch.org.uk It beggars belief that this vulnerable pony isn't being monitored after being visited by more than one organisation during the fight we had to get it seen in the summer months. Do these organisations not follow up on cases? I will get in touch with those who had input last time but need hard evidence before they will act. apologies elaine emw xx ETA- A report has now been sent asking for this pony to be seen asap. I will keep update but horsemadpeter, please also keep me in touch with what is happening. We are not in Burnely and need your eyes.

I had to report one to ILPH and they were out within the day! Ring them, they are brilliant. they also rung me afterwards to tell me what had gone on.
As for RSPCA they are more interested in politics. If you said that the pony was being used to hunt foxes they would be out in a minute.
good luck
