Just wondering if it possible and if so how common is it for an abscess to break out by itself or are they likely to stay in the hoof and fester? My sisters horse was lame a few weeks ago then went sound after two days of being in. No heat or swelling anywhere in the leg other than the front of the hoof. Vet was useless................ Anyway she turned him back out and 10 days later he has gone lame again. Again there is nothing in the leg we can find but and the warm patch on the hoof was back again but today it is cool (but still lame). We can't get hold of the farrier for a week and don't know where on the hoof to poultice as we can't find any heat now. We have left him out in a small flat field as we have been told that the pressure from walking around will help the abscess come out. Any ideas??? I hate winter!!!!!!!!

Sounds like it could be low grade laminitis
Yes - they can have an abcess with little or no lamenes (especially if shoefree) - and the abcess will sotrt itself out in time

He is barefoot and has been since last April. I am fairly confident it is nothing more serious as he went totally sound after being in for two days and has been 100% sound for the past 10 days since he has been turned out. I am wondering if the pressure on his foot from walking around has set things off in the hoof, better out than in!!!! We just want to make sure we are taking the right course of action.

They can get small abscesses without you knowing and just break out through the coronary band. Although the bigger ones will cause lameness, and you will know about them and if left can break out by themselves - worst scenario, but if my horse was horridly lame I'd want to get my farrier out sharpish to have a look and release any pressure if it is an abscess as soon as possible.

I have left a few pleading messages to our farrier and he is booked solid for a week but has promised to get to him as soon as he can.

Do you have a back up farrier that can come out? I would hope that you're farrier would be able to squeeze you in at somepoint seeing as you are having trouble. I wouldn't be best happy if I was told I had to wait a week.
Do be a bit careful as I think it's best to get the abscess out and clearing up as soon as possible, rather than to leave it to fester - it might be worth getting your vet out if you aren't having any joy from your farrier...
