Today i was in the kitchen and heard the ducks and chickens making a real racket. Ran into garden in time to see a heron circle over their enclosure. It circled twice then disappeared behing some trees. I though it had gone, then next thing i know it comes around from the other side, swooped down and tried to take my call duck! I waved and screamed and when it was about 10ft off the ground it thought better of it and flew away. Thanks god - it was going for Tallullah my 'iccle call duck pet who i hero worship! lol! Locked all the birds in their wire pen for the rest of the day as i was worried to leave them out. OH thinks i imagined it and thinks herons wouldnt take the birds! Is he right? Am i going mad? Anyone else seen anything like this before?

Thought herons were fish eaters. Are you sure it was a heron op? Do you have fish in a pond if it was a heron it could of been attracted to them.

Was definately a heron!!! 5ft wing span - scared the living daylights out of me! lol! We have a river not too far away, and often see herons flying overhead - cant really mistake them!
We dont have any fish either!
Last year though one of our hens disapeared, andthere was no sign of feathers or anything. At the time someone said, not a fox then, bet it was a heron! I laughed and told them not to be so silly, herons ate fish!

If it was a heron then could you not put some net or something if only in certain places where the chickens etc go. I know it would be awkward but would maybe work

If it was definately a heron you need to make a decoi heron, or buy one, they look just like the real thing (only theyre made of plastic) These work because a heron will never eat in the same place as another heron well not in a small space any way! We have chickens and fish and the heron has had a lot of our fish but have never seen one since we got the chickens! I have never heard of them taking anything other than fish before though! lol!

LOL Marywelsh swan. Reminds me of a time when we were out walking the dog along the canal bank and my husband said "There is a heron", I couldnt see it anywhere. He pointed to - wait for it - a lump of wood! Didnt even look like a bird let alone a heron lol. Never ever let him forget it. Asked him soooo many times since if hes seen a wooden heron.
