Have you tried your vet? This dog may have a physical problem which might need investigating first. However, an emotional problem seems likely if he is rescued. What about his background? Can you give any information about this?

I had similar problem-took over a year to 'solve' but worth it! My dog had been kept caged so was happy to lay in own poo. We finally stopped it by changing her food to a cheaper one(opposite of what vet suggested!)and fed her 2x a day. Loads of praise when she went outside-as dog trainer said, pretend she's pooing nuggets of gold-how pleased you would be-praise her that mush(yes, you look silly & get funny looks!) Also a good run rather than a walk seems to get the bowels moving, so a good run last thing can help. I know how frustrating this is(have had 2 unhouse trained dogs!)Where do you live? Have number of brill trainer in west yorks, and she might know someone in your area.

Would seek vets advice to rule out any physical cause first then try trainer as suggested. Is there anyway you can find out about his background? How long have you had him?

He may have a seperation anxiety prob. We took in a badly treated jack russell, she ruined an axminster carpet by ripping it to shreds and pooing/weeing all over it. This was only when she was left on her own, whether during the day or night. Took her everywhere with me during the daytime as she would stay in the car for shopping, meetings etc and then took her basket upstairs in our bedroom at night. She slept like a baby and no more probs. Does he poo when locked in the stable for the hour?

Have you tried feeding him at night and not in the morning or giving him 2 small meals a day instead of one. Is the poo runny (sorry for being graffic)?

Just a thought, will he poo on paper? Does he chew things in the kitchen? If he doesnt try putting some of the plastic carpet protector down with paper on top at least it wont be so messy. You can then pick the paper up and disinfect the plastic carpet protector.
