She has been refusing all her food since last eating on Thur. Vet checked her heart and lungs, they were as good and strong as he would expect to hear a younger horses He took some bloods and tonight rang to say her liver funtion was good but it did show a slight infection, so he is coming out tommorow to clip an area so we can inject her with antibiotics, no good putting them in her food as she won't eat. He said apart from that she is in fantastic shape for her age, (she will be 48 next April). She will also need a follow up blood test just to check her white cells. But he did say obviously she can't go without food and although bright in herself at the moment if she doesn't start eating by next Wed or Thur then we might have to consider letting her go. So positive vibes please everyone that the antis work and she is soon back to good health and her old cantankerous self

Kandy, 47 is a bloody good age and whatever you've done to keep her that fit to such an age is fantastic and a credit to you! Not many get to be so old and still so loved!
My friend has a 42 year old and we have shared many tears over the last couple of months when it looked grim for him. She's had so many tests carried out, as you have, he is on various types of medication. He too has a heart like a lion but she is coming to terms with the fact that he won't live forever.
If you do decide to let her go, then let it be with dignity. I do know what you're going through believe me. Take care xxx

Wow 47 years old that is fantastic Has anyone checked her teeth? It could just be a loose/sore tooth(Thats if pony still has any). Have your tried soaked grass nuts and sugar beet/high fibre nuts? or even some porridge might help. Hope Harri makes a full recovery.

Thanks everyone, yes the few teeth she has left are reguarly checked by an EDT and vet checked them again today. The remaining ones are now a bit mishapen and pushed into her gums but not sharp and holding on fast. She is fed 3 big hard feeds a day which are soaked in with sugar beet to make them nice and soft as for a few years now she hasn't been able to eat hay and much of her grass intake she quids, but thats through lack of teeth rather than a tooth problem. The 3 big feeds keep her a good body weight, so its imperative especially in this cold weather we get her eating again.

What an amazing age... I hope Harri is perked up a bit now. We've a couple of extreme oldies here who have few teeth and need the extra 'mile' regarding feeding. It's a worry when they begin refusing to eat though. Good vibes for Harri. emw x
