we just kept putting him outside when he wanted a wee or in mid flow and he soon got the hang of it that if he wanted the toilet he went to the door,

I've just got a new springer puppy. So far we've only had a couple of accidents in the house. I watch him like a hawk and if he has a drink or something to eat then I pop him out in the garden. He seems to instinctively know that he has to go on the grass. When he's in the house I use puppy training pads. They are just basically a large square of material that have something on them to encourage the pup to use it as a toilet rather than the carpet.

I managed to train myspringer in 3 days! During that time she had 7 accidents in the house - all of which were my fault!
I used a crate and literally put her in it everytime i left the room, even to go to the loo myself. Put baby gates up and lept her in the kitchen only during the days. She could then come in the lounge with us in the evenings.
I literally was watching her CONSTANTLY during the training period. The bast way for them to learn is to NEVER be allowed the oppotunity to get it wrong. If they have an accident it is your fault for not watching closely enough! Therfore the is no reprimand. If you catch them in the middle or about to do it, i would just say 'no molly no' grab her and get her outside quick. When they go outside, stay with them constantly and praise profusely EVERY time they do it right!
By the end of day 3 molly would sit by the door and look at me to go out.
It is definately worth giving it your 110% for a week rather than 90% for 6 months! good luck!

When mine were pups I took them out in the garden very frequently, sometimes as often as every 15 minutes! They don't only want to go after meals and after sleeping so you have to give them the opportunity as often as possible. During the night they slept by my bed and I would literally take them out every time they stirred, even if it was 3am and pouring with rain! Although this was an inconvenience for me it meant they were all perfectly house trained day and night in a matter of weeks.
If you can't commit yourself to this then you must expect accidents but if you haven't caught the puppy in the act there is no point punishing it as it won't understand and will just start to be fearful.
The main thing is to praise them lavishly whenever they 'perform' outside and also use a command which they will associate with the act - so whenever you are in a hurry and want your dog to do something you can use your command and it will understand what you want (mine all do!). On the same priciple that dogs can learn sit, stay and down they can also learn another word for their little jobs!!

I trained our Staffie with praise, praise and more praise. She was put out after she had eaten or drunk, when she woke up and if she looked like she wanted to go and not forgetting if she had been playing and got excited. I used the command wee wee (lol I know) and also wave the arm outwards at her when saying it when she was looking at me. This arm movement was because we had a friend with a deaf dog. Then everytime she did little pressie in the garden I rewarded her with some of her daily ration of food and praised her like mad. Never once smacked or told her off and after a few weeks she has been going out and weeing to order lol. Oh and the other. Put paper down all over floor for few nights, she chose where she wanted to go then moved little at a time nearer back door. The more pleasant the experience now the calmer and more contented the dog will be in the future. Good luck and enjoy.

Very cute puppy! I was very lucky with Buster, as he was house trained when he came! My friend that bred him, worked at home, so I guess that helped. When he came to us, he only leaked a bit if he got excited!

Crates are good. A puppy will do its unpleasant stuff as soon as it wakes or straight after feeding so get into a routine of outside asap.If you feed outside it will automatically associate all these bodily functions with outside anyway especially if he cant wait to get his dinner.

absolutely do not smack your pup, never ever loose your temper with a pup
it is great that you ask but surely you thought about these issues a little beforehand? I had a crate before collecting my pup and as suggested above crate training is very effective, also very practical if pup is to travel with you anywhere
I would also suggest joining a puppy class, APDT (search the net for your nearest) are very good.
have fun with your cute pup
