B****y awfull day yesteraday ! I accidently hit my dog, Pip a cocker spaniel, with the car !I still cant really remeber what happened. I was going out to pick my daughter from work and both her and one of the other dogs must have followed me up the road and were playing and a;ll i can think happened is that Pip got knocked by the other one and landed by the car. I dont think the car went over her but she has a cut on her face and has broken her pelvis in two places!. I feel so awfull, she is such a gentle animal and to see her lying in pain is just terrible. She has pain killers and antibiotics and is to lie still for 6 weeks. It cant be plastered because it is too high up.I am just so glad that i was going slow or she would not be here now. Has anyone else had a dog with broken pelvis and did it heal ok ?

I had a cat when 4 years old broke his pelvis high up, got run over, and the vet could not offer any treatment and after a shortish time being kept as still as possible in a small box, about 6 weeks I think, he went on to live to be 21!
Terrible thing to happen, but they are so silly sometimes, hope she is soon back to normal.

No, but my horse fractured his pelvis four years ago! Was on box rest for three months, and took years for him to stop being so unlevel. Can get away with unaffil dressage but always get comments about suppleness and engagement as that's what he still struggles with most.
It's just a waiting game for you now to see how she heals, but don't beat yourself up about it, accidents happen. Might turn out to be a good thing in the end as she certainly won't play round cars again!

Poor you (((((hugs))))) Its bad enough when a pet gets run over but to have done it yourself must make it all the harder. I'm sure with lots of TLC she'll be bouncing around again soon

Hi all, thanks for all your kind thoughts 1 Pip is much better today, her usual bright self though obviosly she cant get up. I took her out ofher box today because she was hot and she started to dag herself around the kitchen so have had to put her back in so she cant move. She is throwing me some really bad looks at the mo. We can carry her out to do her toilet and she manages fine and can clean herself when she comes back inso that is good. Her appetite is fine and she takes her medication so hopefully she will be ok. It is awfull to see her lying in her box because she is so full of energy and never sits still for 5 mins. She is also a working dog and we just dont know if she will be fit enough for this season but i am sure that she will let us know. She loves her work and as she is Johns dog he takes her everywhaere with him. We were cutting the last of the barley yesterday and when i went to the tractor she was not there at my feet and it is silly little things like that that make me realise just how used you get to having them around.I think thatshe will be ok and just thank god that it was my daughters corsa i had and not the ladrover which could have done more damage. We also have my daughters dog, Spencer at the vets at the mo. He one of Pips 2nd litter and he is only 6mths old. He has not been eating for a week and has been sick so he is being opened up as i type to see if there is anything in his stomach. It just seems thatwe are having bad luck at the mo but i will let you know how they re both doing. Alison XXXX

Vet has just phoned and When she opened him up she found half a cork stuck in his small intestine !!. He should now be fine and is on strong antibiotics and will be comming home tomorow morning. Now we need to work harder to pay the vets bill!! lol. Seriously he is going to be ok and should be back to normal within a couple of days. Why o why do we get so attached to our animals !

thats good news!!# hopefully pip will be fine.ive experienced this with 2 dogs, one was knocked down and left on my door step, and the other was hit by a car and another 5 drove over him after this. dont know who owned either of them buit brought them to vets and both were rehomed.as far as i know they both made a full recovery although these were just pets, not working dogs, so not too sure from the point of view but he is alove and that is the main thing!!!!! good to hear about the other doggie too!!!

I forgot to say, a friend of mine ran over her dog some years ago, I can't remember if he had a broken pelvis or not. However, I do remember that she had him treated by an Oesteopath and that did help.
