Have come into a little money, so want a new car to tow my trailer. Looking to change to hopefully something a little cheaper to run than my K reg trooper! So if you had £15k to spend on a new towing car, what would you go for? Any recommendation much appreciated.

Lucky you! I would personally go for a Land Rover Discovery Diesel. Great towing cars and give approx. 35mpg. Parts and servicing are good value. You could get a really nice motor for that money. Good luck.

A new Disco 3 would set you back more than £15k though. I had one as a courtesy car when my crappy freeloader was being serviced. It was absolutley the dogs b*ll*cks. Turbo diesel V6!! It could pull a tank out of the mud!!

If you buy a Disco PLEASE get it looked over by an expert first. Some are great, others are just a heap of scrap. I can't really advise because I use a 15 year old Shogun petrol. My friends have just bought one of those Korean 4 x 4, but that was new. However, the husband is a car freak, so he obviously reserached it really well and he bought by looking on the internet for the cheapest deal.
The Saturday Telegraph does a Motoring Section and they often have questions about the best vehicle for towing horse boxes, so you ccould probably look up their website and see if you can find the answer to the question.
My Shogun is fine, an enormous improvement on a Series III Landrover. Very heavy on the petrol, but it is only a spare so that doesn't matter. As it has got older we have had to spend a a bit on repairs, and parts are expensive as they have to come from Japan, so that is the downside of an imported car. Beware "grey imports" although some people say they are fine, check with your insurance co. first.
Land Rover - the parts are cheap and easy to come by.

I've just changed my 'L' reg Disco for a 2001 Shogun LWB. I would definately say my Disco was better for maneouvring the trailer about and actual 'pulling ' power. The Shogun gives a much nicer ride though and is nicer for everyday use - the boot is miles bigger for all my tack etc on show days . The Disco was a 2.5 TDi and the Shogun is a 3.2 Ddi - I dont seem to notice any difference on diesel. The Disco was permanent 4 wheel drive as opposed to selectable on the Shogun which means sometimes I forget to change it. The disco was automatic and the Shogun is manual - next time I would definatelygo for an automatic again as its easier for me and on the horses. Not sure whether I would plump for a Shogun or Disco next time - at themoment I think it might be the Disco but I've only had the Shogun a couple of months so more time needed really . For 15K you should get a really nice secondhand one of either . Lucky you !

The Hyundai Tucson or Santa Fe come with a five year warrenty which is worth thinking about, although it would depend on how much weight you'll be towing. If weights a problem then you may have no option it's but to go for a Discovery or 110.
