To be qualified you have to pass the vet nursing exams. If you can get a trainee job at a vets then they will usually pay for your training and it also means you'll be getting loads of hands on experience which will help with the studying. There are specialist courses now for equine vet nursing, if you're interested, but think there's only a couple of places that do it.

Try asking at local vet surgeries, although I think less of them do it now because the training system changed. Contact your local college - they'll be able to help you. Also, check out the Vet Nurse Association on the web - can't remember the address, but a search should bring it up.

I looked into this last year when I was made redundant.
You need to find yourself a veterinary surgery who are happy to employ you, whilst you are studying. You will find a list of registered surgeries on the veterinary nurse's website - which for the life of me I can't remember at the moment. You'll need to do a bit of ringing around, but they ARE out there.
The surgery will pay you not very much - in the region of £10K - and if you are lucky they will pay for all of your training, although most make a contribution, and some expect you to pay for it yourself.
The initial training takes 3 years, then you can take further training for higher grades. After training, the pay goes up to about £15K, and goes up a bit further each time you qualify further, but you won't get rich on it!!
It involves long hours, and you get all the nasty jobs like cleaning up sick and, well, other stuff.
None of this put me off, expect for the major cut in wages. My OH is looking for another job at present, and if he finds a well-paid one I may go for it.
If you want to do it, and can afford it DO IT! I work in an office at the moment, and would seriously, seriously love to pack it in and do something I really enjoy.
Good luck!

Thank you Jenny I have written a letter and am forwarding it to all the training practices in my area - fingers crossed! A wage drop wouldn't be great, but I cannot stay in this office for much longer! I'm not bothered about sick and poo! Had animals all my life Thanks again for replying
