Help which diet for dog with itchy skin?

I am looking for a good food to feed my dog with sensitive skin.

Well I know which one I won't be using again, and that's Royal Canin Hypolallergenic.
You can only get it from the vets and it's about £12 per 2 kg!! Honestly I can feed the horses cheaper. It didn't do much good and smelt oddly medicinal though my Dog Jasmine loved it.
I think sometimes vets tell you to try something just because they don't know what else to do, too expensive to keep them on it long term.
Friends of mine swear by Burns, haven't tried it yet though, look's a really boring food to be honest.
The vet was saying that there are some new wonder pills just come out they are expensive at about £6 per pill but are the thing for itchy dogs. I don't know the name of them though.

Barf diet. You can't beat it for dogs with bad skin. Both my dogs & all 5 of my cats are on the barf diet.

This website will give you all the info you need, but I don't buy anything from them, I make it up myself.

Varkie, I was also interested in the BARF diet, what do you feed your dogs and cats? What was the reason you changed?

Any food which has no artificial preservatives, colours, wheat gluten should help. Don't forget to only feed treats with the same criteria. Burns is excellent as is Autarky.

I actually started it for two reasons. A friend fed hers this way, and they looked so well. Add to that I had a cat who was in the vets every month, and had been since she was a kitten, with various skin problems. Vets said it was fleas (despite all my efforts to eradicate any) or hormones causing the problem. So I decided to give BARF a go. The first 6 weeks of it, the cat was worse, and all the others began to itch too, and I wondered what I'd done! I think, looking back, that it was probably a kind of detox, so they got worse before they got better.

They've now been on it for about 6-7 years, and they are all so well. The cat in question is now 14 years old, and has only been back to the vet once since we changed diet! She no longer gets itchy - unless she steals some human food! The triggers seem to be any grain based product - gluten, wheat etc. And when you read pet food ingrediants, its shocking how many have this in - and other things too that you wouldn't expect.

What do I feed? Chicken wings, chicken carcasses, lamb, beef, not pork very often but we can often get pigs heads for free from butcher for the dogs, basically anything & everything which comes from an animal & is raw. They only have offal about once every two weeks, more than that isn't good for them. Same with fish & eggs, they get that about as often. They have veg once or twice a week - they do need a certain proportion of this.
