We hear a tawny owl at night quite often.
Does anyone know where I can find the sound of a fox alarm bark on the internet? I often hear this very strange noise and neighbour swears it is fox - but sounds as if it has a sore throat! Read on an internet site that this is their alarm call, but would just like to listen to be sure.

www.angelfire.com/ar2/thefoxden/fox_territory_call.wavtry this? there are other fox calls listed if you go to www.angelfire.com/ar2/thefoxden/sounds.htmlhomepage We have a vixen come near our front garden frequently (last time with 2 cubs) and we also have 2 hens round the back garden! But they have yet to attack as the dogs (2 mini schnauzers) are out all freerange with them during the day and securely bolted in at night! We also have some wierd owl calling and this is how I discovered looking for sounds on the net. I put in fox +.wav as that is the files frequently used. I will look out for another fascinating site I didn't bookmark but there are millions of animals listed from whales to tigers etc, even a hedgehog!

Thanks Jo. It is the 3rd one down, fox calling out. Hear it lots from out bedroom.
My poor dog is now running around looking for the fox and getting quite agitated! She HATES foxes with a passion and goes mad chasing them!

Jo, is that a Patterdale in your Avatar?
No foxes here!...or badgers, plenty of flat hedgehogs though

Could be a young deer. Having spend literaly hours watching and listening to young deer this year, I can vouch for the fact that they make a noise very much like a squeaky bird

Boy, that foxes' sounds website is comprehensive! Just identified the 'strange haunting' cry as being the one that used to haunt me for years in my last house! It sounds more like someone being murdered than a wild animal calling.
Looks like a mini schnauzer to me, Wally.

I was convinced someone was being killed near the yard a couple of years ago, there was such a strange sound! I've also heard the sounds of small furry animals being killed by much larger ones when it's pitch black - just what you need in the middle of nowhere when you're on your own

thanks for this thread, The mystery of the strange noise is solved.I went to the rspb site and listened to the barn owl - which incidently nearly blew my speakers as it was a little loud. That wasnt it, however further reading led me to the tawny owl and thats definatly it.If anyone listens,(should you have lots of time on your hands..)its the later ke-wick noise rather than the traditional hoo hoooo x
