Ok, slight birdwatcher here. The tawny owl is the one you'll most probably hear. Other owls are comparatively silent. The "terwit terwoo" you hear is usually in fact two owls calling. I went to a demo by a bird of prey man who explained the simple way for remembering which is which. "Twit!" calls the female, "Who?" replies the male. Actually, our female sounds like emy's most of the time, very loud and screechy (Essex bird, you know!).
For the record, buzzards make a sort of mewling sound, usually when circling. You also wouldn't hear a buzzard at night.

Another slight birdwatcher here too! Just had a look in bird book and it sounds like a barn owl.

I think it is Shakespeare who is to blame for people believing that owls go 'twit twoo'! ;D Tawny owls make a sort of short, sharp 'kewick' and also a long 'whoooooo'. If you hear two birds at the same time it can sound like 'twit twoo'. An anorak fact from Zohar

At night in summer we get Snipe drumming and Divers that sound like an enraged Donald Duck in the wing.
There's lots of owls that don't do the traditional T'wit-T'woo.
The BBC sound archive has all sorts of bird calls you can listen to, search that until you find it.

Have finally got to listening to link and yes have to agree with Kooky it is the Tawny Owl we are hearing also. Funny though as there is not that much woodland round here. Thanks very much.

Muntjac deer make a noise like a squeaky toy. I spent several hours lying in the hedge trying to track down the source of the squeaking and caught them at it!
