help! some days my mare is good as gold, other days she is a nightmare to ride as so stressed. i have just started on steady up after trying relax and a herbal calmer. i noticed it has magnesium, i understand that is supposed to help? is it possible she could get worse before i see an improvement? what supplements do you use? she is not mareish, so i don't think oestress would help, she can just lack confidence and get nappy on her own in the barn or on a hack. i would reckon cannabis would do the trick, but i don't think that is acceptable!!!!!

I use Naf Magic supplement for my gelding who can be a bit sharp and spooky, but he's calmed down since being on it, it took a few days though, it does contain magnesium.

Oh that's interesting Jo R, I didn't realise Top Spec did a calmer. Can it be fed in addition to their balancers? I am using Feelgood 30 Calmer for Bobby - jury out at the moment as to whether it works or not as he isn't doing enough for me to expect him to be particularly calm right now. But I love Top Spec products and would defo be interested in it as long as it wouldn't clash with his feed.
Sorry to hijack your thread OP

You could try feeding something like Calmag, which is a relatively cheap cattle supplement and available from agricultural feed merchants, you can get 25kg for the same price as a tub of calmer. It's certainly helped us, but won't have any effect unless your horse is magnesium deficient in its diet. This is apparently quite common with much of the grazing in many areas of this country. Another option would be to try eliminating any mollases from the diet, this can have quite a marked effect on some horses.

I have used Steady Up on my first horse who was a fairly highly strung mare and it worked really well, it did take quite a few weeks for it to get properly into her system though. But I know other horses that it didn't do anythig for. I have also used MagCalm to great effect. I think it depends very much on the individual horse what works best.

my friend uses Stroppy Mare suplement, and she has found it fanstic. Ruby is very much calmer and more chiled out. Think it is made by dobson and horrel, but not sure.

yes you can feed the calmer along with the feed balancer (its desgined to be fed as such) I had great success with it with a mare who appeared 'hormonal' and stressy/fiddly.
