hi i was wondering if i may ask a question as to what to feed my mare and foal, billie is 17 and is hard to keep weight on in winter her food looks well digested though, and i cant get hold of simple sytems in small amounts, so she is on 4kilo of d&h mare &youngstock mix about 4kilo of speedy beet, 3kilo of alph -a spilt up into 2 feeds wich she grazes on over a couple of hours, and ad lib hay and haylage my foal is 7 months old and is on 1kilo of the same mare and young stock mix and a good scoop of alpa ,A plus sugar beet, she is 14.2hh they both live out with a barn for shelter on many acres foal is unrugged, mare is 17,2 hh and very light weight, id like to put them both on a higher fibre diet with a good suppliment and maybe linseed for the mare im not quite sure what my foal need dietry wise she is an ok doind niether good nor bad really,i cant think of any thing else you might need to know, my other bunch of good doers are about to just live on ad lib hay, cant you recomend a good broad spetcrum supplement, thanks ,i hope you dont mind my asking

Jen, don't know the answer for Billie and the foal, other than would have said Simple Systems if you could have got hold of it.
With regards to your good doers who are living on ad lib hay, would definitely recommend Top Spec Anti Lam Balancer for them. Bobby has this. He is not laminitic but is an exceptionally good doer. He always looks like a "shiny conker" to use the words of one of my friends to describe him and since I put him onto the Top Spec balancer about a year ago his feet have been fantastic too.
Sorry can't be of any help with Billie and the foal, but I am sure there will be someone far more knowledgeable than me re feeding who can help there.

Jen, the best advice I can give is to phone an independant nutritionist or Nicola Tyler at TopSpec, and tell her I sent you. I don't specialise in breeding stock so I don't have all their requirements in my head and you'd do better to ask someone who does.
As far as alfalfa products go - don't forget you can get pure alfalfa pellets without the molasses from both Dengie, D&H and DrGreen, Alfa-Beet which combines the two from Dengie, and unmolassed beet pulp pellets from Eurobeet (Any Badminton horse feeds supplier) so you don't have to buy a pelletload if you don't want.
