My horse is out 24/7 with 2 others (my friend B's horses) in a fairly large field. We poo-pick regularly and we have been following the Equest/Equitape worming routine. We are due to worm again in January but we are going to do a worm count beforehand to make sure its needed.
However, another friend (lets call her 'P') has just bought a horse and will be keeping it in with mine and B's horses. The horse has an unknown background. She has seen the vaccination record and all seems up to date but she's buying from a dealer and they have no idea when the horse was last wormed. She phoned the vet and they said to worm the horse as soon as it arrives and also worm the other horses in the field (mine and B's). When P spoke to our YO she was told not to bother worming this horse but just to turn it out. She gave her some horror story so now P is not going to worm.
I'm rather annoyed about this especially as the worming history is unknown for this horse. P said that it had a 'bit of a gut' on it which could indicate a worm burden? If she doesn't worm it, then surely the chances of our horses picking up untold worms, (even if the field is poo-picked every day) is very high isn't it? If its wormed then the liklihood is greatly reduced (the worms and eggs are likely to be killed by the wormer aren't they?)
I haven't seen the YO to tell her I'm not happy about this, but what else can I do? I don't have a stable so I couldn't keep my horse in (or the new horse for that matter). I just feel that our horses are being put at risk unnecessarily. Am I right in thinking that or am I being paranoid?
