A while ago I wrote in to ask about my horses severe coughing in her stable. I tried soaking the hay but it didn't seem to do anything. Her coughing/choking is becoming more frequent and we are considering calling the vet out. Yesterday my other horse began coughing but no as badly. It might be to do with the shavings, are some brands better than others? Does anyone no what it is or how to prevent it?

If a horse begins to cough, if it is severe, I would have a vet out immediately. If it is mild, I would eliminate all dust (soak hay, use dust free bedding, turn out as much as poss etc), but would get vet out within a week if cough didn't clear. if you no something is dusty try eliminate that and see how it goes from there. if your horse contines to cough then call your vet out as soon as possible. hope this help hollyxx

Unless you can pinpoint something obviously dusty which is causing the problem, and eliminate that, and hopefully the coughing stops, then it is time to get your vet out.
