Sigh... but I've got the soft leather chaps ;D When am I ever going to grow up and stop letching?? I've been trying to avoid gazing deep into the blue eyes of a school governor sitting opposite me tonight... mind you, governors meetings are painfully boring!

Time ive got, my girls r my life..... I just dont have the knowledge..... When i bought ocean i rode her bareback for about 6-8 wks until i got a saddle 2 fit her. Ive ridden both in the field with a halter and lead ropes.
I have a strong bond with both the girls, they both make me laugh, and have very different personalities.
Kas who teaches you, and do you know any programmes that can teach me liberty work....But i dont and wont use crops, whips, of any sort, im sorry but thats not my way....I would rather spend a yr asking my girls 2 do something, than 6mths telling them. If you know of someone or a video that i could learn from, i would really appreicate it......
Thanks Lv Tray xx

I originally learnt liberty work as a Parelli student. Now I study with Steve Halfpenny, who I much prefer. The approach to liberty is a bit different as well. Parelli do a video on working with your horse at liberty, but it builds on the on-line groundwork that has been done in Level 1 on 12ft line and Level 2 on 22ft line. Steve includes the basic start of liberty on his Intermediate DVD, and that would stand alone without much on-line work first. The DVD does include a lot of other things though, riding work and things like first bridle. If you don't like use of whips, crops etc then you'd best steer clear of Parelli. I must admit, a stick gets used in Steve's programme as well, but to a much lesser extent. I don't use it in liberty work though, normally just a rope in my hand (Steve uses a proper roping rope, but I get tangled up in them!). Whereabouts are you Tray?

Hi Kas,
I live in Winsford Cheshire, but somehow i get the feeling you live down south.
Im not confident in riding Breeze out of the field, she was very spooky when i 1st got her (3yrs ago, and 3yrs old), and it knocked my confidence BIG time. Im 110% confident with her on the ground.
I had a sharer in the spring/summer who rode Breeze, while i rode Ocean. Although Ocean gets nervous when people approach us on the bridlepath, she doesn,t spook, just stops and sometimes shakes, i give her a gentle rub and talk 2 her and ask her 2 walk on, and bless her she does. Ocean is restoring my confidence in the saddle, and the ground work im doing is helping my confidence so much. I rode Breeze for the 1st time in 2yrs while hubby lead ocean, it was only a short hack but i did it.
The sharer i had is no longer with me, so im limited on what i can do. Hubby works permanent nights, he comes up with me everyday and poo picks, while i spend time with the girls.
My girls have there own field, and live out, they wont be seperated, but r quite happy 2 let me work with each in turn.
Im partically disabled (arthritis in 95% of my joints) so riding isn,t everything to me. Im hoping to get another sharer next yr, but in the mean time i want 2 give the girls something 2 do. Ive heard that people say Breeze is wasted with me, but i love my girls with all of heart and life wouldn,t be worth living without either off them. I think those comments are being said, because i dont hit and shout, use a crop, or disrespect my girls. I much prefer 2 be gentle and patient, and give lots of praise.....
I use my voice, body and hands, dually halter and lead rope, or free. I lack the knowledge to progress, and there is no one i can ask for guidence, even tho there is 2 women on the yard who do parreli, (there horses r in there own field). If i ask, what, why, how, they are very evasive, so i dont bother now. Sorry Kas, if ive gone on again lol if you can give me any advice, i,d truely be grateful. Also if u r close enough, maybe i could come and see you.....Thanks so much...Lv Tray xx

Ah rats! Yes Tray, I am down South! I'll email Steve and ask if he's got anything recorded that would help with liberty... I Parelli you teach on-line first, which means that you do your 7 games. I'm not sure you would like being taught this by the ladies where you are, so maybe it's as well they aren't helpful. PM to remind me and when I've got a mo I'll reply with a bit more detail on Parelli training. There are some liberty basics I could try to describe that you could have an experiment with. Really, with liberty you need to understand how to move your horse's feet a bit, but you are limited only by your imagination. You need some ideas on how to keep the horse with you though, I can try to give some help. I understand where you're coming from with the sticks, I think of mine as an extension of my arm. It gives me a bit longer arms for pointing and direction, and on the occasions when I'd like to tap a bit of horse with my hand it helps me reach. Does that sound OK? Also about riding not being everything - I have a horse I can't ride, so interesting things to do on the ground make life more interesting don't they? I wish I had someone to poo pick!
