Hi guys,
This is my first post to the forum so let me start by saying hi. A little about us to start with, I own 1 horse and 1 pony. I have a 15.2hh Appaloosa mare who is 22 years old and a 12.3/13hh mixed breed pony who is 10 years old. This post is about the pony, Deenie.
I first bought Deenie in 2011 as an unhandled, damaged little 4 year old pony who was sold through the sales. She ended up with a friend of mine who bid on the wrong horse (don't ask, I don't understand either!). She came to me and over the space of two years she was broken in, became 110% in traffic and in general. She was a brilliant pony. I decided at the end of the summer in 2013 that Deenie needed to go and do more than be a hack pony. I found what I thought was the perfect home for her with a little girl who adored her, I was wrong, so wrong.
Anyway, Deenie came back to me April 2017 and she was covered in severe mud fever and so on. Once she was healed and happy, a friend from the yard helped me bring her back into work. I was hoping to put her out on a part loan from the yard. That's not going to happen as she was very strong and not many people would be interested in a strong pony, plus, I worry about a child on board such a strong pony.
Between my partner and I, we decided to give her a brand new career change and break her to drive. We've got her harness and she's taken to it amazingly! She's been long reining for the past week and doing well. I'm in no state near to putting a cart to her but I would just like to ask if anyone has any tips and tricks to make this part easier and less stressful?
Also, she was in a loose ring snaffle with a Waterford mouthpiece but we've had a few issues with her getting impatient while being asked to stand and walking through it. After some research and reading a few posts on here, I decided to order her a Liverpool driving bit with a straight mouth piece. I have used a Pelham before, she used to be ridden in one but never used a Liverpool, is this much the same as a Pelham?
Any other tips and tricks for breaking to drive?
Thank you in advance! <3
