To true cameo, lovely to see you on here ,Thank you for helping me,no your right about food, I will look up that man. Thank you!!
Thinking about it,my videos don't look to good on here as I am holding a whip and using food,
and food fed from the hands does enourage barging and nipping as well as other things you don't want,it opens a can of worms
so don't watch my videos and copy, don't try this at home,on my videos I am more showing them to see where I can progress from the lifting up the legs and looking for ideas

Hi Veronica, my question is why do you want to teach this? In my experience, once horses start learning this, unless very carefully cued, they end up knee-capping everyone who walks past because they might get a treat! If you want something to do with a horse that doesn't have a "job" try horse agility or in-hand lateral work, Oliver Hilberger's books is very good

I didn't know that Hannah, you seen that a happen lot then?
its just something I fancied doing, and thought we have some fun together learning how to do it
I love watching horses do the spanish walk and always wondered how it was taught .
and thought ID have a go in trying to learn how you do it,charm isn't ridden anymore and I lost my bottle for ridding,so it was something I was thinking of aiming for in maybe riding her in field doing the spanish walk.
when I use to ride years ago I loved doing dressarge,I wasn't that good at it but enjoyed having a go.
ahh well never mind thanks for telling me.

Thinking things over as it felt like my ballon had been popped,I been thinking-charms getting on in age and so am I,she doesn't see anyone really other than farrier and people like that dentists and so on and me and family,I can't see her doing that with any of the mentioned, and she isn't really a in your face type of horse, once I finished she goes off and does her own thing.
so could it be that harmful?

maybe I will look into setting something up in the field,as I am watching videos over and over and she swishing her tail a lot when asking for the legs I don't want her unhappy doing something if she doesn't like doing it.she could be doing that because she is still confused in what I am asking her to do? on the second video she isn't swishing it so much going forwards,so it could be just confushon,I have to work out which one it is I think I will do more going forwards when asking to see if she still does that

Something that may help is to make the reward more immediate - there is currently quite a delay between the movement and her getting the food reward.
Whatever type of reward you do (food, head rub, pressure release, clicker training), the reward needs to be as instantaneous as possible for the horse to understand what they are being rewarded for.
The other question is if there is a health reason why she isn't ridden any more? As you mentioned she's getting on in age and not ridden, I wondered if she suffers from arthritis at all? If so, she may find the exaggerated action required for Spanish walk uncomfortable.

oh thank you clipclop, first for watching and reading and commenting on my thread.
yes I can see what your saying with the reward, also I have noticed by the videos myself that the pressure on lead rope is to long when I am trying to get her to lift up and more forwards.
no there isn't any medical reason why she isn;t ridden anymore, she was ridden a lot when she was younger. but it has crossed my mind if she could have a touch of arthritis, although she doesn't show it,but it has crossed my mind if I should be doing this she is 23yrs, my legs and knees creek I am 52 so it has crossed my mind with her.
I think Iam going to knock this on the head and do some algilty things with her, once I work out how you bulid one of those over head things, any ideas?? Thank you clipclop
ps She does seem to like me going out to do things with her, mind you its more the carrotes, although Id like to think it was me, :)tee hee
its good to take videos warts in all,to see what you don't relise your doing or not doing.

I am not going to do it anymore with charm, but but it still in my head has me puzzled in how you teach it,and I did just watch a video which I am itching to try out but wont I don't know the people in video and haven't watched any of their other videos, I just came across it but I do like the way she explains she teaches it.I do like to do clicker sometimes, just for me my reactions are a bit slow,so my timimg isn't that great with them but I do and have used one, would never say never. what do you think guys?? I don't know who they are or anything about them just liked this video but I didn't understand how you lift both feet at the same time,I think that would be a bit hard to do, and hard for a horse to balance I liked how she taught to say foot and how she lifted her own leg and walked in sink,I really liked that. if anyone has a go or has done teaching the spanish walk, and has a video please post it, as it will be in my mind puzzled for the rest of my days :)tee hee

What she means about both feet is to be able to pick up both feet individually from both sides.
Eg. When you are stood on the left side of the horse, teach them to pick up the right foot for you. Same with standing on the right hand side and picking up the left foot. I presume this is done to prevent having to swap sides each step.
In all honesty, I am in full agreement with Hannah that I personally don't see it as being beneficial training and have seen horses inadvertently knee capping people to try and get treats as they've been half taught the 'spanish walk'.
Obviously it's your decision what you do with your own horse (or a horse in your care so long as you have the owner's consent) and it can be fun for the owner but as it's an unnatural gait, I have never been able to see it as being beneficial to the horse.

I would tend to agree and there are plenty of things you can teach her that will definitely be beneficial and you can work them into some horse agility sessions. Things like head lowering, going step-by-step through an L-shape or S-shape of poles, stepping over raised poles, walking under bunting etc. Even just walking alongside you, matching your pace, stopping when you stop, backing up with just the slightest signal. You could work up to doing this at liberty - it gets them really focusing on you
