Hey everyone, I dont know where else to turn from here, we keep a horse on our land for a friend of my granddad and i've been working with this horse, although I wasn't told I can tell it was emotionally abused previously but I have been told she got 'so dangerous' she was turned out after a young lad started training her to canter and jump but she always freaked out when asked to canter, (bucking, rearing, etc) and obviously that lad training her attempted to teach her a lesson, so she is basically half trained at 12 years old.
But the problem is she still doesnt like cantering, So i've only ever cantered her once without being thrown off, the only other 2 times I cantered her I was tossed off and I asked for them to have a chiropractor or someone professional to view her because I found it hard to believe such a good natured horse is being 'bold' and I was brushed off and told to give her a smack just as the previous riders have but of course I refuse. So I started her on groundwork and sometimes when asked to canter without a rider she twitches her head (shes had her teeth done for the first time ever because I pushed the owners to) and sometimes freaks out completely , she will rarely even canter in the field on her own when the other horses are, when she does she sticks her neck out, her whole entire body looks tense and her steps are short as if she is avoiding using something. So again I pushed for professional help and was ignored because i'm not a qualified trainer but yet even advice from my trainer was brushed off, my trainer before even seeing a video said 'has her back/pelvis been checked' but the owner thinks its a training issue, because shes been out at field her whole life (is it possible it is?)
She has gotten worse with time although I have done very little with her because I dont want to feel guilty if I were to find out she was in pain and I pushed her, the owners have been wondering why I wont jump her or canter her so I showed them her barely making it over a cross pole without a rider and I was told 'maybe its because the jumps are too small', she wont stretch her body, she hunches up and doesn't use her hind , again she is avoiding using something. I have watched literal half trained horses smoothly go into a canter with a small buck and use their whole body, I have rode a horse who has never cantered or jumped in a canter and a jump that went better than this mare. Can anyone give some advice? , should I keep pushing for someone professional? (I'm nearly tempted to use my own money or even pitch in!) or could I be wrong?
The owners are starting to doubt I am any good at all and think i've lost my nerve cantering her and even suggested having a riding instructor they now who is a 'good rider' canter and jump her and I am raging, help!!
