With the expected heatwave coming this week, I thought we could make an advice thread?
My boy can sweat in the field on a hot day, he wears a UV reflective rug and is pink skinned so I'm concerned about clipping him. Although if it gets really warm I could take under his neck and belly off.
What is the best way to keep our horses cool and hydrated?

Plenty of fresh water (our boys are lucky enough to have a fresh stream in there field), access to salt lick. Stable doors open so they can come and go as they please. Sponging down if it gets really hot. I however live in Scotland so there nae chance of us having a heat wave

Heatwave, eh? Shady trees, lots of water and salt block/supplement should do it. Its been 40+ here in Nevada, US. We pretty much just don't go outside. It's a special kind of Hell.

My boys are in for the hottest part of the day, mainly because the heat seems to be bringing out the horseflies and both were just standing in the field non stop headshaking and scratching. Brought them in and both are now having a nap.

Why do they especially need a salt lick in the heat please?

It helps them maintain hydration.. in hot weather, their requirement doubles... or slightly more. If memory serves, a normal horse needs 2 oz per day, but in hot weather or hard work, it can go up to 4-5 oz. Loose salt works just as well, too.
