Yesterday I joined a group dog walk. We had 20+ dogs all walking together enjoying each others company and no fights. The sun was out and it was really a lovely day. We kinda split up on the way back as some of us wanted (needed) a sit down and a drink. The others went on ahead. we were watching the dogs playing on the beach. One was a boxer wearing a waistcoat lol.
So as my friend and I (also a dog walker & horsy person lol) were walking back to her car, we heard shouting and screaming behind us.. We turned and saw two dogs fighting and a woman screaming so loudly she was drowning out the sound of the dogs.. We kinda swithered about weather we should do back and help then decided we should.. The boxer with the coat on had one of her three dogs by the throat.. (she had 3small dogs, a staffy, spaniel and a crossbreed) now we do not know how it started, our gut feeling that it was one of hers probably the staffy or crossbreed that started it and the boxer was standing up for himself.. When they eventually separated the woman totally ignored her bleeding dog, and the others the boxers owner put his lead back on and tried to take him away from the situation (and the other dogs) the woman phoned the police and grabbed the lead to prevent him from going... (I understand that's actual assault on the dogs owner) I also understand the woman was upset but her first priority should have been her injured dog.. It was about 20mins before her attention turned to the dog.
I really believe the boxer was not to blame.. All the dogs were off lead so "out of control" but once it was over the boxers lead was put on and her three were still running wild high on adrenalin.
No nasty comments please. I didn't see the whole thing, any one of the three could have started it. Unfortunately it was the spaniel that got hurt. I don't think it was that badly hurt as it got up straight away and was running about..

That's horrible.. Poor dogs.. I had a neighbour with a dangerous guard dog who used be off his chain when the owners were in the not enclosed garden, we walked past one day with ours on leads and their dog came out behind us and attacked the smaller of our two who unfortunately fought back, the bigger one wouldn't have, the other dog was a staffie/bull type cross and vicious mine was a cocker cross with guarding instinct anyway, the owner actually tried to blame me because my dog apparently started it...but we had passed his gate and his dog snook up behind us.. He was afraid of his own dog and tried quite feebly to pull him off, it was terrifying.. He was very lucky my dog was not seriously hurt but he was a dog with issues we were trying to retrain...and the mental scars were worse than any physical ones. The neighbour did eventually get rid of his dog, after he attacked several others and no one could walk down the road.. That was entirely his fault and responsibility, however having been on many group walks, if lots of dogs are off lead then these things do happen, I believe it's the risk you take.. She has 3 dogs so she must know that.. If it was me tho unless I saw the whole thing I would have to stay out of it.. Regardless of my gut instinct about blame.. Other neighbours here often complained about the vicious one attacking their dogs, but they walk their dogs off lead past there so I wouldn't even comment, they knew he was there they knew he was guarding his home and they still let their dogs pass off lead..

Sorry, don't think I made myself clear.. the dogs involved in the fight were not part of the group dog walk my friend and I went back to see if we could help, both being dog walkers.. a passing cyclist had got off his bike, and was also yelling at the boxers owner.. always the same.. big dogs get the blame..

Well being a boxer lover ( mum and dad used to breed them) and growing up with them I think it might have been as case as you say of the boxer standing up for himself..........they normally have the most lovely natures, which is why mum and dad had no qualms about having a pack of them around us when we were growing up, we knew enough when to leave them alone after they had been playing with us. They can get a bit boisterous(sp) and they can bowl you over.........but they are normally never nasty ......in fact they would rather walk away from trouble than get involved. Silly woman would have been calling the vet and sorting my dog out before calling police and detaining folks

So would I PB.. I don't think she was even the dog's owner... she wasn't dressed as a doggy person would dress for a beach walk lol, not that that's got anything to do with it

I would have checked the injured dog first and foremost and collected my dogs on the lead. I may have shouted a little "if" the other dog had indeed started the fight but i generally let these things go as dogs can sometimes start on others even when they dont usually. My bunch had a fight this afternoon i didnt see it and there was blood on the floor when i got home BUT everyone is fine now and all crashed out together i cant see any injuries (infact perhaps they ate something in the porch :/ oo ek) anyway off topic. I keep Harry on a lead as i know he can be dog reactive but it drives me nuts when people just allow their dogs to approach him. I say all the time "please call your dog back" and i get the usual answer of "but my dog is fine" Ahhhhhhh!!! If a fight started i would blame the owner of the off lead dog (not the dog itself) but i realise sometimes you can lose control of your dog and its just something that can happen. I think it was a shame the boxer got the blame as from the ones i have known they do tend to stay away from trouble, my staff x will often start trouble if she can the little beggar but thats cuse she getting grumpy in her old age so again i put her on lead around other dogs. Milo, Jake and Holly are all good around dogs they will greet but generally back away from trouble although Jake will rightly stand his ground if needs be but i can call him off at any point and have at times grabbed another dog thats attacked him told Jake to leave and then handed the offending dog back (silly i know) I mean Jake was attacked by two rotties and a terrier as a puppy i hae never been so scared in my life and the owner of the dogs did nothing he just walked past then opened the van door bundled dogs in and drove away. I dont blame the dogs at all i blame the idiot with the dogs. Mine are no where near perfect and so many people have better behaved dogs but mine are treated in a way which will not cause trouble out and about if it can be helped.

The prob is imho, that different people react differently to different situations. The majority would I am sure tend the injured dog and restrain the remaining ones, but sometimes this all goes to pot because everyone including the dogs owners are rushed with adrenalin.
Not sure you could presume the injured dog was not too badly injured as his/her adrenalin would be high and have seen a cat with its back leg nearly ripped off still going for it, so........
Not a nice experience. Is there any way you could find out how the injured dog is, Julz? Just to put yours and your friends mind at rest.
