Cavalier King Charles spaniel whose owner could no longer keep him because she had to move to accommodation that doesn't allow pets. He is 9 this year, and I fetched him on Sunday (she was going to have to approach sanctuaries as his deadline was Tuesday). I thought a CKC might work well with ickle Rosie, and be less likely to chase horses and hens - no longer so sure, despite allegedly fine with cats, he has barked every time he has caught a glimpse of Benson (who has decided to live upstairs ) His cheeky personality is beginning to emerge - he can bounce as well as any spaniel Lots of training to do when the weather improves and there is less to do at the yard, so I can give him full attention. I knew one belonging to a friend years ago who was a constant fixture at her yard, and always so jolly

Glad you've found another dog Jill, though I don't seem to be able to view the pic of Jake at the moment. Hope it works out well with him and that Benson shows him who's boss soon Looks like we might be getting a 9 year old spaniel too - a retiring working sprocker (3/4 cocker 1/4 springer). She belongs to a gamekeeper, his partner is the daughter of the lady who used to take in Scamp when we went away. She knows the dog well and says she's lovely, she's just had enough of working and has had a couple of litters of pups. The bonus is she's very well trained and has to be actively sent off after a pheasant so she's not going to go disappearing over the horizon with her nose to the ground . The only downside is she's been kennelled all her life so may not be house-trained but Tina (the mum) has had a retired working dog before and says they usually adjust to living indoors with no trouble at all. She likes her so much that she's decided she'll have her if we don't want her, so there's no pressure. Meeting her later in the month after the grand-daughter (who adores her) has had chance to say her goodbyes. Poor girl, but gamekeepers usually can't afford to keep their retired dogs, sadly, and it's the lucky ones who find a retirement home.

Sorry, was reorganising my Photobucket pics - try again! I just walked him to the yard to meet the hens who fluttered a bit but he didn't take much notice. Benson cat on the other hand is a difficult cat to get a dog used to - at the slightest woof he panics and runs. Early days, at least Jake loves his crate, all it needs now is for Benson to stroll past a couple of hundred times lol.

Aww he's sweet Jill. Looks a bit baffled but that's not surprising as moving home at nine must be a bit of a surprise. Not to mention having to get used to Benson . How's he getting on with Rosie?

Gorgeous
We had a King Charles as a family pet while I was growing up, loved her to bits, she used to sleep at the bottom of my bed

He has some learning to do How not to chase the cat how greeting visitors is NOT a contact sport and how he is no longer the one in charge lol. He is struggling with a "down" - too subservient - but he is remarkably cheerful and has got his bounce back. He LOVES a good razz around my garden, haven't taken him to the yard really, I need chance to give him my full attention and at the moment it is too busy with 5 stabled horses. As regards the visitors thing, I now understand why she walked him out on his lead to meet me when I arrived. Maybe she thought I wouldn't take him if I knew and he had 2 days to go before he went to a rescue - but she didn't know how many dogs I have trained, I could have been a relatively experienced owner. Early days yet..................I'll take some vids or pics when the weather is better.
