Went to yard (work one) and they have a pair of magpies usually they pootle about picking up food and stuff but one has been holed up in feed room for last few days just hopping around the barn or what not. I picked him up and he is a good weight and his wings are in good nick plus he can grip fine with his feet he is just so weak (hence me picking him up) i let him go and he flew a little way before curling up again \nd he hopped into the barn before i left. Any ideas whhat could be wrong is it just old perhaps? I felt awful leaving him there but his mate is still hanging about and atleast he can get food. I just wondering if there is some sort of tonic i can give it LOL yes im crazy..... extra food? Bring him inside? Wormer?? Anybody?? Or just leave him to his fate.

If he eats bits of old feed etc he might have picked up food poisoning. Wild birds can get botulism from infected food, it sometimes happens with garden birds at bird feeders that haven't been cleaned or have a lot of decaying seeds underneath. We had an outbreak once, found a dying blue tit and had to clean and sterilise everything.
I doubt if there's much you can do to be honest, it's not easy to treat wild birds. Magpies are more robust than most, perhaps he'll recover if he's able to stay warm and dry. Perhaps make sure he has access to clean water and that there isn't any decaying spilt horse feed lying around (difficult one I know - I'm sure my feed room is not exactly hygienic!).

Hope the poor thing pulls through. Be very careful about hygiene and salmonella in birds - very nasty disease and can be passed on to people.

If you could pick it up it must be very ill, magpies are very difficult to get close to as they are so suspicious. Probably not much you can do other than let nature take its course.
