Concentration tires them out far more than any physical exercise (which just makes them fitter IMO). When I used to take mine training they were always shattered after a very sedentary but focussed session of sit- and down- stays. Clicker training is good but can confuse them when there are more than one.

I often try to train seperately with the newbies my lot all kind of know the rules so they all sit when i look at each dog or what not. I was teaching him to find today which he picked up quickly he is currently knawing on his bone again now. I hid food treats and sent them looking. Il have to put in a few training sessions a day i think. He seems keen to learn. It was suggested he might make a good gundog but i know nothing about such things and he does like a game of tug :/ which might spoil a real bird hahaah.

It would just tenderise it a bit Troop! Brain Games for Dogs is a good book for suggestions. One thing suggested in it, is to make your own plaited material dog toy. Elmo now has several made out of a pair of my old jods! You then put treats into the plait, for them to extract.

Lovely piccies, Troop and looks like they are all getting on well together too.
Lexi used to have a large plastic bottle filled with sand. She had to touch the bottle with her nose to get a reward/treat. Clare used the clicker immediately she touched the bottle. The bottle was placed quite near her then further away, started off touching just once with her nose then had to be two touches with nose.
Treats were hid on the courtyard and she was told to find which she enjoyed too, also made to sit facing you with treats being thrown over her/behind her, then told to find, wasnt allowed to move/look where they were until you said 'find'.
Funnily enough we were only just talking about this today and we all decided it was the mental work and not the physical which tired her out the most.
When we knew she had the start of hip dysplasia Clare had her walking over very low jumps under vets instructions, pieces of dowling fixed between two bricks, three in a row.

Great ideas there! We sometimes do A-recalls, by throwing food and then recalling, but great to have some new ideas to try! Thank you for posting that Troop

Have a look at free shaping for dogs, its fun training that drains their brains, my spaniel is so tired after a session

I made some little rag toys and pouches filled with cat biscuits kept them entertained and i also wrapped some tennis balls in old jeans which helped them survive more than 10 minutes . We also spent an hour playing find the toy which was fun and he loved searching. It was hilarious as when he couldnt find it he would bring a different toy hehehe.... Holly chose to sleep in his crate with him last night and the OH has taken them both to work today so im left with the wolf n miss grumpy pants both are sound asleep at my feet think they are enjoying the quiet.

Heart in mouth last night somehow Harry got out i have no idea how i think he scrambled through broken bit of wall but am otherwise at a loss he hasnt tried it before. None of the others went and i ran out to look for him to spot him in the road just outside mums .... I asked him to come and bless his heart he looked and trotted up towards me unfortunately my mum let Jakob out just as Harry was passing mums door and Harry launched at poor Jake BUT i shouted at Harry to stop and he did and waited quietly next to Jake for me to take his collar. Seriously i couldnt believe it this is HARRY zero recall and hates Jake.... I was so very proud of him but did have a cry cause my poor boy could have been hit by a car and killed . I have blocked off the tiny gap but OH said that the back gate was unlocked and thinks somebody may have let him out :/ . New padlock on just incase but Harry hasnt tried to escape today so im bit miffed.
