I am absolutly full to bursting at my yard after rescuing two lovely horses.
I have a beautiful TB mare who was off to slaughter as too much for novice owner unpredictible in nature but too fed up on corn and looks like shes had a slap at some point and lacks confidence (not happened in most recent home as was doted on) I have her with the aims to bring on as a show hack for myself will have to see but at least she has a second chance now, shes 6 healthy and very well bred yet was going to be pts I paid £60 for her and her breeding well exceeds that price!
Ive also taken on a welsh cob x whos owner had a stroke and couldnt keep her anymore, she is currently recouperating from an injury and her owner was going to have to have her pts because of it, yet the vet says by spring shell be fine and is a lovely natured safe 6yr old!
My friend who breeds has also been offered hundreds, it breaks my heart that we cannot help more but I really am at my limit for space and finances such a shame more cannot be done.
I went to the sales last week to buy some rugs for these newbies, and had a peek in the horse section, some very old ones going through and surprisingly prices were better than the same time last year but not good e.g 14hh coloured 3yr old for £150, I have to admit if my oldies had to be passed on I would pts at home while theyre happy and looked after.

I know it costs money to PTS, but I do wish people would do that rather than hawk poor old horses to the sales. If people breed irresponsibly (and they do) for a few quid, people also pass old horses on for very similar reasons.

In all honesty given that you've described the mare as unpredictable in nature I'I think the owner was probably right to consider PTS rather than palm her off to the sales and an uncertain future. It might be harsh on the horses but if more people did that there'd be fewer troubled horses being passed froim pillar to post and suffering en route.

Well done for rescuing them Bramblesmum. Hope it all works out brilliantly for you.
I must admit over the last 6 months the situation with unwanted horses has really made me think. I had ideas of breeding from my colt (who is a rare breed) but have decided with so many unwanted horses being born, I will have him gelded.

Michellep this mare has been being ridden by experienced riders and proving very capable just not a novice ride, the man has never ridden before and bought a competiton very sensitive mare (sadly she was going to be meat, not just pts hence my concern) she is proving very sane and workable, yes she has some funny ways but dont they all. SS shes lovely (am biased I know a real firey girl but with such a gentle eye and way about her - most of the time) shes by Karinga Bay x Snowmore shes 6yrs old 16hh and unnamed and never raced she has lovely paces and is very dainty almost in a pony bridle etc I really do hope to show her if she proves sane enough for me - but will trust your expert eye here what do you think? If shes not shell still have a job just more aimed towards dressage. Also one of the honey monster! Am loving these two girls just seems a shame theyre fate was so uncertain before, now at least I can ensure a good home with someone if not with myself xx

She's too tall to be a show hack Bramblesmum, but if she has enough bone she could be a Large Riding Horse once she's made up. Well done for rescuing her.

Ahh thats a pity, will get the measure on her to make sure but she seems bigger than amber whos 15.2hh what size would show hack go to? Definatly a no go for riding horse as shes got less bone than any of my others (twiglet legs!) dressage it is ;D shes a lovely person so have high hopes for her in the coming months.

It is so sad, there's a lot here going about the Internet via various rescues and it's breaking me not being able to help them now.. An awful lot of youngsters too.. Poor things don't stand a chance when people keep breeding.. Cobs skin and bone when I've mine living out on a diet.. I'm finding myself staying off Facebook etc to avoid all the sad stories I can't help.. Happy for your two newbies tho!! Well done!! I hope they work out for you!! They must be so relieved now!
