I have a 4yr old Welsh D who has been turned away since October. Since then we have handled him daily, turned out every day and no change in routine. We do lots of pressure/release, leading in hand ect. However over past week he has 'changed'. A bit nippy, kicking out with back legs when picking out feet and just different. He was in with my mare, but we've now put him in with an older gelding now as he was hassling her. I am wondering if its because we put him on Alfa A Oil as we thought he might need a bit of condition before we bring him back into work in March. Any theories?

I've never fed anything with alfalfa in but have read on a lot of forums that it can sometimes make horses a bit fizzy and also a bit footy, I would try stopping it again and see if there is any change.
Another thing it could possibly be would be if the weather has been quite mild your way is a bit of extra grass growth, we had a few warm days last week and though there's been no change with the horses the grass has been showing some lovely fresh green shoots.

Alfafa transformed my horse into a complete nightmare. He wasn't difficult in the way you describe but hot and spooky to ride to the point I didn't want to take him out at all.

I had something similar with my mare, she was left for a week without work, went to get on and was very naughty. Carried on like this for a few rides then decided something not right, had her teeth checked. Problem sorted. But she went really grumpy and is normally the nicest person, could be pain related.

Alfalfa has often been linked to behaviour issues, he is also of the age when he will be testing boundaries - think Kev the teenager.
Do you need to start feeding him up before work? better to start work and feed accordingly so you are not priming a time bomb.

Don't forget that in this weather, it is all to easy to slip or stumble and jar themselves in the field

i had 10 steps back and a few fowards with my welsh d mare but shes amazing now but could poss be the feed too , i cant feed my mare high oil due to liver issues but my friend horse went hyper on a high oil diet it wasnt for her
