… Of course there may always have been the practice of adding horse meat to 'beef' in the past and present but it cannot be described as 100% beef - which perhaps is why they are suddenly being found out. I think it is pertinent that the horse meat has been found in 'value' beefburgers - who would eat one of those anyway? In the Lidl's range, ther ordinary burgers only had "traces" in other words, the catlle–beef had been through a "contaminated" mincer. The quarter pounders that I bought, were labelled 99% beef and I thought the 0.1% was the cereal and seasoning they contained. I only bought them to have them in the freezer for the occasional lunch . Now the remaining two are going back to Lidl's with a large complaint.

That makes more sense specialized, i had never heard of horse meat being classed as beef. If that was the case then i am sure lots of products would include it. It is probably all the wording on the labels. They wont just say "contains horsemeat" as people wont buy it, they word it so you don't know what it contains! Personally i don't want to eat horsemeat but at the same time i eat other meat so guess i can't be too hypocritical about it. However i think the packets should be clearly labelled so you know what meat you are eating. Some of them were found to contain pig meat, what about the people who don't eat that for religious reasons? They would have no idea. Now Solly, i think you need to elaborate on that one??

Which is one of the reasons I only buy meat from our local butcher who can trace it back to the farm it was purchased from and in all cases the cow/pig/sheep. At least the burgers he makes are 'safe' from 'other meat based additives' or make my own,

Horrible, horrible story. The chap on Radio 4 just now said this was picked up as part of an investigation to test whether food was being mis-labelled. Food-fraud, really... In the past they've investigated whether fish products sold as containing cod actually did contain cod, and uncovered scams where other white fish was being used. This is the same kind of investigation. In other words, it wouldn't matter what the label told you: what they're trying to catch is cases in which the label deliberately didn't tell you what was in the product. So it would be labelled as all beef, when horse-meat or pork was actually lurking in there. Another reason to try never, ever to buy "cheap" processed foods.

They are sputtering excuses here and talking about 'contaminated continental ingredients.' Why as a farming nation with plenty of Irish beef we need to import continental beef is beyond me.

price Kanga, cheap meat is just that, Irish beef, will be better quality and therefore more expensive! its down to the consumer demanding cheaper prices -not that it feels cheap everytime I go shopping.

The suppliers to the processing plants that are suspected are from Holland and Spain so will routinely be handling horse meat and cross-contamination is likely. The cheaper burgers will be made with the 'sweepings' and could have anything in them.

As a meat eater although I'd choose not to eat horsemeat, I do feed my dogs tinned food and I do accept that it's a normal foodstuff in other cultures and not like it's a major health risk.
As lawyerbunny says, I think the most pertinent point is that the companies making these burgers either didn't know there was horsemeat in them, in which case how can they make any kind of guarantee about quality or safety, or they mis-labelled them which is fraud.

If horse–meat becomes to be seen as acceptable, then we start an avalanche that we'll never be able to stop.
At present, horses are transported great distances in Europe, in appalling conditions, to die in slaughter houses, in Italy primarily. In Britain we have always been able to support the ban on transporting horses for slaughter, because we didn't find it acceptable to eat our friends.
Whilst respecting the right of other people to eat horsemeat if they wish to, let's not say that it's okay. We all know that encouraging horsemeat eating, will encourage its farming and will escalate the welfare issues that we are already plagued with now.

I think what has just been revealed will prove to be the tip of the iceberg. This sounds like it has been going on for a while.

The incident at 28% wasn't a smudge on a mincer!

Wonder if the price of having a horse shot and disposed of will now go up?

I have said for years veggy or not - don't eat proccessed food. Idon't buy mince. If I can't recognise it as a cut of meat I don't buy it. I ask my butcher to make mince out of a cut I have seen. Take pizza for instance - from mid range and lower there is no real cheese on that. Every so often I eat some processed food fully aware that I have no idea what is really in it. I like the taste ( that is the idea) but it make me feel rough so I rarely indulge. Do you know what is in that ready meal? ?

Ewwww.... Ready meals are not for me. When I was dieting last year I tried some premium brand low fat low cal keep yourself fuller for longer type stuff as I thought it would be a quick already calorie counted meal when I was working my longer hours. They gave me IBS and I've never touched a ready meal since. They are so high in salt and sugar (probs to hide the real taste) that its not even funny.
